On April 28, we recognize the National Day of Mourning, a time to honour workers who have been injured, made ill, or lost their lives due to workplace incidents.
At PMG, we believe prevention starts with awareness, accountability, and action. Together, we can create workplaces where everyone gets home safe.

As workplaces continue to evolve, so do the expectations around safety, accountability, and employee well-being. One area that often gets overlooked—but carries significant risk—is having a clear and comprehensive Drugs, Alcohol & Cannabis in the Workplace Policy.
Why does this matter?
✔️ Promotes a safe work environment - protecting both employees and the organization.
✔️ Supports compliance - a well-crafted policy helps demonstrate due diligence.
✔️ Provides clarity and consistency – equips managers to handle sensitive situations when guidelines are clearly defined and consistently applied.
✔️ Encourages early support and intervention - creates space for employees to seek help and access support when needed.
✔️ Protects organizational reputation - managing workplace risks reinforces trust with employees, clients, and stakeholders.
What can happen without one?
⚠️ Increased safety risks and potential liability
⚠️ Inconsistent or reactive decision-making
⚠️ Uncertainty for managers navigating difficult conversations
⚠️ Greater exposure to legal and reputational damage
A policy in this space isn’t about control - it’s about clarity, fairness, and care.
If your organization hasn’t reviewed this recently, now is a good time to ask: Are we setting our people - and our leaders - up for success?

Health and safety works best when everyone is involved! 🦺
In Ontario, workers have the right to participate in keeping their workplace safe by reporting hazards, sharing concerns, and contributing to safety discussions. Workers can participate by collaborating with their supervisors or the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
When workers speak up and employers listen, safer workplaces are created for everyone. 🤝

In Ontario, maintaining a safe and healthy workplace isn’t just good practice, it’s part of your legal responsibility. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 restricts smoking and va**ng in enclosed workplaces, including company vehicles, and having a clear Smoking and Vape-Free Environment Policy ensures your organization goes beyond basic compliance.
A strong policy helps:
• Ensure compliance with provincial legislation and avoid potential fines or complaints.
• Protect employee health by reducing exposure to second-hand smoke and vapour.
• Create clear expectations around smoking and va**ng on company property, in company vehicles, during breaks, and in designated areas.
• Promote a healthier workplace culture that supports employee well-being.
When expectations are clearly documented and consistently enforced, employers reduce confusion, support respectful workplace behaviour, and demonstrate a commitment to health and safety.
A simple policy can make a big difference, helping your workplace stay compliant, healthier, and more productive.

Women play a vital role in the success of farms across Canada, yet much of their work often goes unrecognized. Many balance farm duties with childcare, household responsibilities, and family commitments—work that can lead to stress and burnout. Supporting women in agriculture means recognizing their contributions, encouraging open communication, and building strong support networks.
This Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, let’s recognize and support the women who help keep our farms and communities strong. 🌾👩🌾

Emergencies such as severe weather, equipment incidents, or medical situations can happen at any time on a farm. Having a clear emergency response plan helps protect everyone on your farm. Identify potential risks, outline steps for different emergency scenarios, and ensure your team understands safety procedures, emergency roles, and evacuation routes.
Preparing for emergencies may not be something we like to think about, but being proactive can make all the difference in protecting lives and livelihoods.
During Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, take time to review your farm safety plans and ensure everyone knows what to do if an emergency occurs. 🚜🌾🦺
