🏆 TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS! 🏆

The Navy Vets are coming home from Ayr as Eli Palfreyman Memorial Tournament Champions after a 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh Penguins Elite in tonight’s final!

The Vets’ penalty kill set the tone early, killing off three Pittsburgh power plays in the opening period with Ian Kubelka standing tall between the pipes to send the game into the first intermission scoreless.

Woodstock struck first 3:12 into the second when Cole Shoup finished off a play set up by Xander Zanier to make it 1-0.

Pittsburgh answered later in the period to send the teams into the third tied 1-1.

Then the Vets went to work.

Starting the third on the power play, Joshua Jodoin ripped a shot home from the slot to put Woodstock back in front.

Moments later, Jordan Vanderlip capitalized on a turnover in the Pittsburgh zone to make it 3-1.

From there, the Vets defended the lead well and Kubelka continued his strong night in goal before Xander Zanier sealed it with an empty-netter with under two minutes remaining.

4-1 FINAL. TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS. 🏆

A tremendous way to finish an excellent four days of hockey for our group.

More importantly, we want to thank the Ayr Centennials organization, everyone who helped make this weekend possible, and all of the participating teams for putting on a first-class event.

We were honored to be part of a tournament that brings the hockey community together in memory of Eli and celebrates a legacy that continues to mean so much to so many.

FINAL | Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 6, Navy Vets 2

Pittsburgh opened the scoring on the power play 6:26 into the first and added another late in the period to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The Penguins extended their lead in the second before the Vets came out pushing in the third, finding the back of the net early to pull within two.

Pittsburgh responded with another power-play goal five minutes into the frame, and both teams would add goals late to make it a 6-2 final.

After opening the tournament with back-to-back wins, today provided another valuable test for our young group against a strong opponent.

Lots of positives to take from the weekend so far — and plenty of work still to be done.

The Vets finish preliminary play at 2-1 and will now await the results of today’s remaining games to determine when and who we’ll face Sunday.

TWO GAMES. TWO WINS.

The Navy Vets kept rolling at the Eli Palfreyman Memorial Tournament, picking up a 5-1 win over Ridley College this afternoon in Ayr.

Robert Landry opened the scoring 14 minutes into the first, jumping into the play and finishing on a breakaway to give the Vets a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.

The Vets added two more in the second as Will McGregor found the back of the net before Cohen Chamberlain converted from the point to make it 3-0 heading into the third.

Woodstock added two more in the final frame to extend the lead to 5-0 before the Tigers broke through late on the power play.

Ian Kubelka was excellent between the pipes in another stellar goaltending performance for the Vets.

Two wins down. One more preliminary-round test ahead.

⚓ VETS OPEN TOURNAMENT WITH A WIN!

A strong start in Ayr as the Navy Vets picked up a 6-1 win over the host Ayr Centennials on opening night of the Eli Palfreyman Memorial Tournament.

Jordan Jacobs opened the scoring midway through the first to give the Vets a 1-0 lead after 20.

Sebastien Fortin doubled the advantage 8:25 into the second, picking the short-side top corner with a great shot. Ayr answered late in the period to make it 2-1 heading into the third.

Then the Vets went to work.

Four different goal scorers found the back of the net in the third:

⚓ Evan Giannone

Between the pipes, Landyn Quirk was excellent, turning aside 28 of 29 shots to backstop the win.

A good start to the weekend, but plenty of hockey still ahead.

This is a tremendous event put on for a reason much bigger than hockey, bringing teams together to honour the life and legacy of Eli Palfreyman while enjoying four days of great competition.
