HENRICO BOTES: FROM THE STREETS OF REHOBOTH TO A NATIONAL HERO

If you've been a follower of the South African PSL for the past 15 years,then you'd have familiar with the Platinum Stars FC side of the 2010s that became a kryptonite to the Big3. That team included the likes of Robert N'gambi,Vuyo Mere,Thuso Phala and our very own Henrico "Henna" Botes. Born in Rehoboth,it was in Windhoek with Ramblers that the big Center Forward would make all stand up and take notice by slamming in 17 goals in the league during the 04/05 season before moving over the Orange River to join Legendary Coach Gavin Hunt at Moroka Swallows.

It was in Mzansi where Botes would develop a reputation of being a no9 that on his day, makes those playing around him better with his movement,hold up play & ability to pick a pass whilst also chipping in with goals. Henna left Swallows for Platinum Stars in 2007 & it was at Dikwena were he played his best football at both club & with the Braves. Botes would leave Dikwena in 2014, after becoming their all-time leading scorer with 28 goals and having played key roles in the club winning a MTN8 & Telkom Knockout double as they finished in 2nd in 2013. Henna would even finish the 12/13 season with the most assists in the league, a further testament to his all-round game.

After leaving the North West, and already into his 30s, Henna joined former mentor Hunt at Bidvest Wits and was just unfortunate to have left before Hunt's Wits won the league in 2017. Botes returned to Dikwena in 2016 for a brief period, scoring 4 more goals before his last career move where he joined The University of Pretoria before calling it quits in 2018. Henna scored over 50 goals in the PSL,Helped 🇳🇦 quality AFCON 2008 and left a legacy of Namibian no9s in the PSL for the likes of Peter Shalulile to add to....a Living Legend.
