With the current rise in Equine Influenza cases in our area I would like to remind owners of my biosecurity routine. If any horses on the yard are showing signs of influenza it's always best to let me know and postpone until all horses are well.

I carry complete change of clean clothes, boots, coats etc to change between yards if I ever suspect anything (such as ring worm, lice etc) however I will currently be changing between all yards as a rule with the rise in cases.

Please let me know if your horse or any horses on the yard have shown any signs of any illness including snotty nose, coughing, high temperature, lethargy, itching, patches of lost hair, rash or any other abnormality.

Cant remember who i was describing this too this week /last week but this is what I was talking about. This is a great exercise for ridden and non-ridden horses and easy to do as dont need any equipment or arena.

Backing Up has Big Benefits

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know this is one of Gillian’s all-time favourite exercises and for good reason.

Backing up is a simple, low-impact movement with no moment of suspension, making it ideal for horses at all levels. It can be performed both in-hand and under saddle, with the horse stepping in clear diagonal pairs.

When done correctly — with relaxation, impulsion, and a softly lowered head, backing up offers powerful benefits:
✨ Increases thoracic vertebral rotation
✨ Encourages core engagement (abdominals, thoracic sling, and hip flexors)
✨ Improves back mobility and posture
✨ Supports collection and overall way of going

This exercise asks your horse to shift more weight onto the hindquarters, maintaining flexion through the hindlimbs, lumbosacral area, and back throughout each step.

How to get started:
Begin with just 1–2 quality steps, and gradually build up to around 20. Focus on long, marching, correct steps rather than rushing or quantity.

Consistency is key. Try to include backing up as part of your daily in-hand work.

*Notice to all customers* As some of you may be aware one of neighbours (Sioned's) ponies has tested positive to strangles this week. Despite my vet advising me a strangles test for our horses was unnecessary I have done so anyway which has come back negative.

We have had no contact with any horses from their yard for over a month in any way and their yard is now on stict lockdown and following their vets advice.

I always practice good bio-security between yards, at shows, lessons etc and will continue to do so.
