Brand new ducklings at the pond.
We started with nine but the night heron may have taken a few in the past day or two. Sad, but this is nature's way. Please do not feed them as the ducklings are a bit outnumbered by the ravenous fish and other ducks who are competing for food and space in this tiny wetland habitat. Enjoy observing and please, if you see people throwing in bread, chips etc. let them know that it is harmful to the ducklings.
BPC Ducklings
Like our beautiful pond, our website is a gathering place, to learn about and follow the lives and stories of our beloved duckling families.
Today the ducklings are 4 weeks old. They are in excellent heath. It is still a very vulnerable time for them. They cannot fly yet and in the past we have had ducklings STOLEN from the pond when they were 6 weeks old! We need to keep them wary of people for that reason. Most people love them and would never do them intentional harm. But others see them in a different light. Keep your eye out for any funny business, particularly in the evening.

Why we need to remove the ramp: The ramp allows the ducklings to leave the pond before they are ready. They face multiple dangers, and if they end up in the Hudson River, which is a likely scenario, the will not survive. BPCA knows this but continues to refuse to remove the ramp despite the ongoing communications we have had with them informing them why this situation requires the removal. They will not budge. We will continue to monitor the pond as best we can, but we cannot be there 24/7. BPCA needs to remove that ramp.

We have sadly lost two ducklings. One on mother's day when it got caught in the wire surrounding the plants, the other, disappeared yesterday. We do not know what happened. BPCA has taken down the wire caging so that is no longer an issue. But we are still urging them to REMOVE THAT RAMP. It is a BAD idea and can only lead to the demise of the ducklings. Please email [email protected] and tell him they need to remove that ramp.
The ducklings are here! Please do not feed them. They are being attended to. Enjoy this wonderful connection to nature.
We now have 9 healthy, new, ducklings in the pond. Despite the challenges of COVID people are visiting, children are excited, and everyone feels a sense of joy and wonder.
Our new tiny ducklings are doing well. Nine in all. Both the mother and the father guard them diligently! It's quite the family. Thanks to the support of some lovely people who have volunteered to get involved and assist with the feeding until the babies are able to leave the pond and find food on their own - about 6 weeks - they are happy, safe, healthy and well fed!
Join our small but passionate community of duckling caretakers. Until the babies are feathered enough to fly they cannot go elsewhere for food. So we take care of them until they can leave on their own. We are looking to involve the community. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested in lending a hand.
