Of course, someone who is new to yoga needs guidance on how to enter and come out of a posture safely. And when someone is practising with physical limitations, an injury or a particular health condition, more individual guidance may be needed.
But guidance should lead towards experience, not replace it.
When a yoga class becomes a stage for the teacher’s knowledge, and the practitioner is no longer given the space to feel, observe and discover, we lose the very core of yoga.
At its most fundamental level, yoga is a direct experience of yourself. The teacher can guide you towards it, but must also know when to step back.
This is where the transformative quality of yoga lies: in those moments when there are no distractions, nothing to perform and nothing to understand intellectually. There is only the experience of the self.
The posture is not the revelation. You are.
