I have put off writing this post for far too long. I started writing it so many times but after only a few words I couldn't see through the tears to continue. I brought shop towels today and I am going to get this done.
Team Korte. What an amazing force. I am not sure that people understand how hard it is to win the province, never mind the country. ( this was acknowledged at the opening ceremonies in Geneva specifically referring to Team Canada ). This little family managed to pull it off twice. An incredible accomplishment. The first trip to worlds was cancelled due to the pandemic but the second time was meant to be.
There are so many highlights that could be shared about this trip. The house, the food, happy hours, the crazy drivers, the back yard, the bone yard, the king of conjugals, the wasp, the white shirt, the merry-go-round, the day trips and a whole host of other things. Travelling across the planet with my brothers to compete against teams from all over the world has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I am positive the rest of the team would agree.
Everyone on the team is so special on and off the ice. You know without thinking about it that someone has your back. There is a bond between us. We see each other at our best and relish in that and when we see one another in need we step up to help. That support is just another piece of the picture.
Bronze obviously wasn't the colour we were looking for. However, I am very proud of that bronze medal. We all are and we should be. This particular trip was once in a lifetime and there is no doubt about that. There is no other trip ( curling or not ) that will have the same meaning and effect that this trip does. We played from the heart and left nothing on the table. You don't see the intensity, the pressure and the emotions on the live stream. Bruce, Darrell, Kory and Rory are rocks. Pillars of strength and unfazed by it all. This still blows me away. I shook for hours after I played. Thankfully, no one saw that either.
I would like to thank Bruce, Darrell, Kory and Rory for allowing me to be a part of this extraordinary adventure. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
After the last game, we went into the locker room and Darrell hung his throwing broom up on the hooks that the league curlers would use to store their brooms between draws. I asked him if he was serious and he said " Yup! ". I asked if he was just leaving the broom there and he said " Yup! ". I said I was taking it home because it had way too much history to get thrown in the garbage in Geneva and he said that would be ok. It is now safe in my basement. It will never see the ice again.......
This is where is gets really tough. I would like to congratulate Darrell McKee on an incredible curling career spanning more than five decades and also on his retirement from curling. There are way too many accomplishments to list but here are some:
3 Brier appearances
2002 Grand Slam winner
2 Canadian Senior championships
A myriad of provincial championships
2 time Potash Spiel winner!! Thank you.....
I would like to wish Darrell all the best in the future. I hope you enjoy golf and pickle ball and continue to improve at these sports daily. Safe travels with Peggy and may you see as much of the world as you want to. I will miss arguing with you about politics, having just one more and especially you throwing your arms up in the air as soon as I let go of the rock. Thank you for everything. I will never forget. You are still too damn good to quit!! There I said it. Maybe Cheech and Chong will show up at the two person spiel again, not to curl, but for all the other reasons.
Thank you to everyone that watched and followed us in Europe. I can't put into words what it meant. All the calls, messages, texts, likes and follows. Those sentiments added so much.
Thank you to our wives and families for your love and support. Ladies, having you there made everything so much more meaningful.
There will be a new chapter for Team Korte Curling as we welcome Jason Jacobson to the third position. Jay has a lot to offer and will most definitely be an asset to the team. He has a great sense of humour and is someone I am proud to call a friend.
To each of you reading this, have a spectacular summer and enjoy the time with family and friends. Make the most of every day.
Humbly yours in curling,
Arlen
