🥋 Sport Jiu-Jitsu or Self-Defense? 🥋
When Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu first gained attention outside Brazil in the 1990s, there was little distinction between sport and self-defense. It was simply Jiu-Jitsu — practiced for self-defense, Vale Tudo fights, and pure grappling competitions.
As Jiu-Jitsu became more popular, competitions grew. Training increasingly focused on techniques that were effective under competition rules, while aspects such as striking, kicking, and defending against strikes were often neglected. This eventually led to what we now call Sport Jiu-Jitsu.
But real-life confrontations are very different. There are no weight classes, belt divisions, or time limits. An attacker may be bigger, stronger, unpredictable — and probably not a trained martial artist. The goal is not to win by points or submission, but simply to get everyone involved out of the situation safely.
We don’t believe there is a «right» or «wrong» way to train. Jiu-Jitsu is great for both physical and mental health, whether your focus is sport or self-defense. Competing can be an incredibly valuable experience and will undoubtedly improve your Jiu-Jitsu.
At Jiu-Jitsu Academy Zuerich, however, our main focus will always be what we believe Jiu-Jitsu was originally created for:
Empowering our members to defend themselves.
