When we really started training more closely together as coach and athlete, we discussed some of his goals. They not only included competing in Wodstock, but also a half ironman a month later and then the Crossfit Open shortly after that.
To say that I was a bit intimidated was an understatement in prepping and peaking his training for the three events.
He got on the podium in Wodstock with a third place finish, is looking great going into the ironman next weekend and I am confident in what we will do in the Open.
Why is this important? Lots of you reading this likely have guys like this.
I think the learning process can go both ways: from coach to athlete and athlete to coach. I am, for sure, a different coach as a result of working with this athlete. I have learned a lot, especially about being more adaptable. It's great to have to take a step back and evaluate things when an athlete wants to work in two sports at the same time (though arguably, we used Crossfit as a means of strength and conditioning to prep for the ironman and it has worked really well).
So, I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to be this guys coach and I would be remiss if I also didn't thank Luis Casali Espinola for acting as a mentor and letting me bounce training ideas off of him....the guidance and spot check was a great help!

I love CrossFit because, in so many ways, it mimics life.
There are so many things that can be thrown at you...weaknesses, strengths...your trial can last moments or what can seem like forever. In both, giving up is not an option... When you need to enter that dark place..your pain cave...do it. Acknowledge that it's sucking, that you are sucking and drive on.
You will succeed. You will overcome.. And in the end, you will be better for it.

It's hard to beat someone who doesn't give up.
Every day is about a process, about slowly improving and building. I demand a lot of my athletes and expect their best efforts every day...and every day I am rewarded by having truly some of the most pleasurable people to work with.
Proud.

Being a coach is more than just showing up and doing a class or running an athlete through a session..
..it's all the time spent outside of class prepping for those sessions, all the time spent studying and watching other athletes, it's about putting in the work to lead by example and about putting your heart and soul into the success and progress of each and every one of your athletes.
It's a tough job, but I wouldn't want any other

Yesterday I ran 6 of my athletes through the Wodstock 16.1 qualifier. Some did RX, some did scaled, but all pushed themselves and took home some valuable lessons.
At the end of the day, it's about your own personal journey and progress with your fitness. How far have you come? How virtuous are your movements? It's not always about numbers on a leaderboard.
For me, I finished the day exhausted and proud and stoked for the days, weeks, months and years to come with these guys.
