Mandao Fishing Camp Looks Incredible 👀🎣

Another new venue is being added to the website: Mandao Fishing Camp.

I am planning to go fishing there on a SEA (Shanghai Expat Association) group trip with some SAAC members, and I am very excited about this one.

Mandao boasts three fishing ponds:
one natural lake-like area with boats,
one intermediate shore-based pond,
and one practice pond filled with smaller Bass so the kids can have a great time too.

But beyond that — look at the scene.
This place looks special.

Beautiful water, multiple options, good variety, and the chance to go and hunt for some 40 cm-plus Bass. That sounds like a very good day waiting to happen.

Cannot wait to get there and see what it has to offer.

Two Tough Tournament Days, New Friends, New Water, and Plenty of Heart 🎣🔥

The SAAC — Shanghai Apex Anglers Club recently held a friendly tournament, with members competing around Just Camping Fishing Park over a 2.5 km hike around the venue. More on the club and that day later, but I can already say it was a proper test.

It was a tough session for me. I only managed 5 fish, and I walked the whole pond looking for bites. Still, it was a great day. I made some new friends, learned more about the water, and added another new venue to my growing list.

Then came the AMIKA tag tournament — and that was another memorable one. It was cold, it was wet, and it was a lot of fun. I cannot run, and that definitely cost me some fishing time, but even so, my tag team partner and I had a really enjoyable day. In conditions like that, something else happens too: the rain, the cold, and the shared struggle create a level of camaraderie that is hard to explain unless you have been there yourself.

That is one of the beautiful things about fishing events like these. It is not only about numbers or who finishes where. It is about people, atmosphere, shared hardship, laughter, adaptation, and those little moments that stay with you afterwards.

A big thank you to AMIKA for a great tournament. For this one, I used their 0.8 mm PE braid, paired with an 8 lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader. Solid stuff.

A Few More Special Catches from Shanghai Waters 🎣

Here are a few more random images of fish caught that I have seen recently — and one that I caught myself.

Included here is a Skygazer / Predatory Carp from the famous Pond 2 at Nan Chi Lu Ya, a really good Bass landed by my friend Rice, and a bred Chinese Sturgeons caught by anglers at iMBASS.

What makes these moments so interesting is the variety. One day, you are looking at a powerful predator from Pond 2, another day, a very respectable Shanghai Bass, and then something as striking and unusual as a Chinese Sturgeon. That is part of what keeps things exciting out here — you never quite know what the next session, or the next angler, is going to reveal.

Shanghai’s ponds continue to surprise, and every fish tells a little story of its own.

Afri-Jigs Have Arrived in China — And They Already Work! 🎣🔥

I imported a selection of Afri-Jigs into China and have started putting them to the test on local waters.

The plan is to test them properly across a range of species, including Yellowcheek Carp, Seabass, Largemouth Bass, Predatory Carp, Redfish, Striped Perch, Big Channel Catfish, and Chinese Catfish. There is still a lot more testing to come, but one thing I already know for certain:

The Bass lures work.

I took them to a pond at Nan Chi Lu Ya and managed to catch two Bass on them. After that, I switched over and tried a number of other lures, but caught nothing on those. That says something.

So far, the early signs are very good, and I am looking forward to seeing how these jigs perform across more venues, more conditions, and more species here in China.
