Expat Parents in Bogotá

Today, two years ago, our eldest son tried to take his own life, four months after arriving in Colombia and a week after starting the school year at his new school.

We knew he was at risk after a terrible story of institutional bullying (institutional = when educators bully their students) abroad.

But it did take us by surprise.

September is the international month of prevention of su***de, and we want to invite you to watch this video that shows that the people that you least might expect could actually be thinking about ending their life.

If you ask families who lived here as expats, they will tell you: a few years in Bogotá leaves an imprint that children never forget.

They remember the warmth of the neighborhood parks, the smiles of strangers turning into lifelong friends, the magic of the Sunday Ciclovía, and the vibrant pulse of the Andes. You arrive as a stranger, but the city adopts your family as its own.
