Surfing is a complete physical sport. The act of catching waves makes use of your bones, tendons and most muscle groups.
In terms of physical exercise, in order to step up from good to great out in the line-up, to avoid injury and to feel energized throughout, the body can be trained.

Certain muscles play vital roles in several surfing functions and warm up and proper out of water training are necessary to improve in the water.

While nothing can truly replicate what our bodies are required to do in the water during a surf session, you can strengthen the basic required movements and physical demands of surfing.

*Even just a few days a month of quality exercises can have a tremendous benefit on your strength, speed and endurance in the surf, and will help to keep you injury-free.*

In training out of water, you want to use full body movements that require integration of muscles and develop full body strength.

Nutrition is vital to staying in the water, remaining injury-free, maintaining energy levels and simply being healthy.

A balanced diet is the perfect choice for surfers. Here are a few tips to keep you fueled for the next four-hour surf session:

1. Eat real whole foods: fruits, vegetables, quality fats and proteins. Remove processed foods and excessive sugar from your diet.

2. Drink clean water and stay hydrated: soda, sports drinks, and artificially flavored liquids do absolutely nothing to help you stay healthy. For a re-hydrating drink, squeeze some lemon, lime or orange into clean water and add a pinch of salt.

3. Eat well-balanced meals: include proteins, carbohydrates and good fats (vegetable oils, for example) in every meal.

One of the best decisions any athlete can make is a commitment to make wise nutrition choices. Sports nutrition isn’t just a fancy college course for jocks anymore. Like any strenuous exercise, knowing what to eat before and after surfing is just as important as your efforts in the water. Knowing what your body needs will lay the groundwork for a good session every time out.

Every surfer knows the feeling sliding down the face of a wave just can’t be beaten. We all want to surf more for longer with more energy but there usually come a time where our energy level start to dip. Knowing what to eat before and after surfing is just as important as your efforts in the water.
POST SURF: This is when it’s good for you to eat proteins, to help your muscles recover, and carbs, to replenish energy stores. Eating 30-60 minutes after exercise will provide the most benefit due to an increased production of enzymes needed to store energy and build muscle.

Post Surf Smoothie:
- Frozen strawberries
- 1/2 Frozen banana
- 1/2 cup Oats
- 1 scoop vanilla protein
- Spirulina
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup water

Core Stability and Strength: core strength in surfing is critical. As in every movement we perform throughout the day and in sport, the core is what allows us to keep our balance, body control, and power. Almost all of your time is spent resisting the force of the water, so it's critical for both your back and abdominal muscles to be in top shape.
