If a system does not enforce consistency,
it cannot claim legitimacy.
There are errors a system can correct.
And there are errors a system cannot afford to justify.
The difference between the two determines whether a system is solid… or vulnerable.
In international sport, good governance is not sustained only by written rules.
It is sustained by the consistency between what is declared, what is recognized, and what is allowed.
When that consistency is broken, we are not facing a simple inconsistency.
We are facing a structural failure.
The principle of estoppel exists precisely to prevent that kind of breakdown.
Because it establishes a clear boundary:
👉 what an organization publicly declares defines the framework within which it may act.
If that boundary ceases to be enforced, the system enters a risk zone.
Because then:
declarations lose their value
recognition criteria become flexible
and institutional representation ceases to be objective
And when that happens, governance is no longer governance.
It becomes discretion.
The issue is not a case.
The issue is the precedent.
Because if an evident contradiction is justified today, there will be no valid argument to refuse the next one tomorrow.
At that point, the system does not fail due to external pressure.
It fails due to an internal decision to tolerate what should not be tolerated.
Good governance is not about managing conflicts.
It is about upholding principles, even when it is uncomfortable to do so.
Because there is one reality that cannot be ignored:
👉 A system that allows contradictions without consequence
does not become more flexible…
it becomes irrelevant.
