At La Carmelita, our location in the heart of Sarapiquí shapes the way we cook.

Our menu brings together different flavors, ingredients, and inspirations, with fresh produce grown in our gardens and complemented by carefully selected ingredients from neighboring farms and producers.

Luxury Travel Magazine recently captured something we’ve always felt at El Lugar: here, the rainforest is never just the view. It’s part of the room.

Expansive windows bring in the changing light, the movement of the canopy and the sound of birds just beyond the glass.

Inside, every detail has a story. Antique pieces sourced from around the world and carefully restored. Wooden elements handcrafted on site in our own woodworking workshop. And in some suites, a private plunge pool to watch the forest change throughout the day.

Even the hot water in your bath comes from a thermodynamic heating system that uses up to 97% less energy than conventional ones.

Comfort is everywhere. But nature was never edited out to create it.

The soundtrack in Sarapiquí has a few hundred voices in it.

Some you will learn without trying. The Montezuma Oropendola makes a sound like water going down a drain, backwards. The Yellow-throated Toucan calls from somewhere you cannot find no matter how long you look. And the Great Green Macaw, one of the rarest parrots in Central America, still crosses this valley.

You do not need to go far. Most of it happens between your first coffee and the end of the walk back.

Bring binoculars. Come down early.

It starts with the handling: how to hold the reins, how to ask with your voice, how to read what the horse is telling you back. The terrain is open and even, so there is room to get it wrong and try again.

Your luggage arrives by oxcart.

The carreta típica moved Costa Rica's coffee to the coast long before there were roads for it, and the painted wheels were how you knew which town a cart came from. UNESCO named the tradition, and the oxherding that goes with it, Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

At El Lugar it still works for a living. Two oxen, a boyero walking alongside, and your bags going up to the suite at the pace of an animal.

No engines. No emissions. Nothing about it is faster than it needs to be.
