Our objective for participants of this course is to begin an exploration of the internal principles and postures of Ashtanga Yoga. Drawing from your personal experience, we will explore the practices and philosophies of yoga, their contexts, purposes, patterns and limitations. Examining the tradition from multiple viewpoints should give depth and sophistication to the interrelated processes of yoga. The course will flow through the many philosophies of yoga into therapeutics, asana practice, sanskrit, mantra, pranayama, and meditation, on into the biomechanics of posture and movement and the hands-on world of relating these concepts to others. The immersion of yogic philosophy & practice is active in a daily rehearsal of synergetic living and observing of the yamas and niyamas. Providing students with essential lifestyle skills to carry these aspects into our daily lives, including the ability to move towards a healthier lifestyle. In addition we focus on nutrition; energetics, medicinal healing plants, the study of the anatomical body, and the subtle body while observing and practicing sustainable living. Ashtanga Yoga

Our Asana Practice and training in the Ashtanga method is in the tradition of Sri K. The traditional method of learning and practicing Ashtanga Yoga, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, is in the Mysore style. This intensive conducts a led Primary series as well practice in the Mysore Style. In Mysore, each student in the class moves at his or her own pace, doing the asanas in a set order. The asanas, and their proper sequence, are learned slowly and individually. As needed, the instructor guides the student, reminding him or her of which asana comes next, adjusting the student in the asana, all so that he or she gradually builds up a personal practice that is deep and flowing, coordinating breath and movement, integrating the body and mind while facilitating a meditative state.
