Those colourful "Christmas trees" growing from coral aren't plants—they're worms!

If they sense danger, they'll disappear into their limestone tubes in the blink of an eye before slowly emerging again once the coast is clear.

🎬 If they look familiar, there's a reason! James Cameron has said the retracting "plants" in Avatar were inspired by Christmas tree worms that divers encounter on coral reefs.

Nature really is stranger—and more beautiful—than fiction. 🌈🌊

💨 Hidden in plain sight...

Camouflage is one of the reef's greatest survival tools. This lizardfish blends almost perfectly into the sandy seabed, waiting patiently for the perfect moment.

Then, in an instant... it erupts from the sand, sending a cloud of sediment into the water before disappearing just as quickly.

It's moments like these that remind us there's always something incredible happening beneath the surface if you take the time to look. 🌊🐟
