When Bonnie Bio's compostable products are exposed to the natural elements of heat, moisture and oxygen they begin to break down into biomass, water & CO2, exactly like food, or a leaf/twig does over time, becoming part of a sustainable life cycle, without leaking toxins into the environment.

The Composting Process Explained:
Composting refers to the biodegradation process of a mixture of substrates carried out by a microbial community composed of various populations within the aerobic conditions and the solid-state. The process of biodegradation is an exothermic process and produces heat which in turn causes an increase of the temperature of the substrate. This stage is called the thermophilic stage , which is a spontaneous process, which is followed by two mesophilic stages. The microbial community changes through the different stages of composting as the environment changes. The final product of the composting process is carbon dioxide, water and biomass (minerals and stabilized organic matter) (Reference - Insam, H. & De Bertoldi, M., 2007. Microbiology of the composting process. Compost Science and Technology, 8(1), pp. 25-48.)
Temperature, aeration and moisture content effect the composting process and by manipulating these factors one can speed up or slow down the biodegradation process. Extremely high or low temperatures discourage microbial activity and therefore slow down the composting process. Excessive moisture, very dry conditions and poor aeration are also not favourable conditions and therefore will affect the rate of substrate biodegradation. Particle size of the substrate also influences how long it takes to fully decompose, for example the rate of breakdown for sawdust will be higher than that of a tree trunk if both were exposed to the same environment.
This is an important concept to understand when considering the rate of decomposition of Bonnie Bio products, which is affected by the same factors influencing the degradation of other substrates i.e. Garden cuttings.

Our Bonnie Bio straws may look, feel and act like plastic, but they are in fact made of corn starch PLA, which has been certified compostable! This means that our straws are capable of disintegrating back into natural elements within an internationally specified composting environment by 90% within a 3 month period, leaving no toxicity in the soil. Safe for home composting too!

The root cause of the global pollution crisis is that the contributing products are manufactured from the incorrect collective of raw materials. This is the Bonnie Bio difference; supplying products and solutions that are compostable which means that they will not contribute towards the adverse global issue at hand – toxic pollution that is not ecologically sustainable. Conventional plastic was greatly hailed on its discovery because it was “indestructible”, however, we have subsequently discovered that this is not always the ideal product characteristic to have, for example products required for a single use purpose. This is where Bonnie Bio products are the definitive answer for giving you this advantageous contribution / solution.
It is time for us to realise that it’s not about what compostable products do to the current system, but more to realise that not only is the current system a failure with regards to resolving the disposal of conventional plastics, it will continue to be a failure and it is destroying our only environment as nature cannot deal with the discarded products / toxins. Therefore, the solution is to provide products that are made from alternative materials that our natural world / environment can process back into natural elements and are not toxic to our only environment.

"What are bioplastics?
The European Bioplastics Association defines bioplastics as being biobased, biodegradable or both. And PLA bioplastics are the only commercially available bioplastics that are both biobased and biodegradable!
What are biobased plastics?
These plastics are made from biobased, renewable materials like corn, sugarcane and cassava. These feedstocks are often referred to as biomass. They enable products that have a reduced carbon footprint and a high biobased content.
What are biodegradable/compostable plastics?
Biodegradable plastics are those which biodegrade in natural environments leaving behind biomass, CO2 and water. They are sometimes made from traditional fossil fuels (such as PBAT) though can also be made from biomass (such as PLA). PLA meets the widely recognized European compostability standard EN13432.
NOTE: Oxo-degradable plastics are made from traditional fossil fuels and include an additive that makes the plastic degrade under UV sunlight. They fragment into micro-plastic pieces and conclusive evidence has yet to be presented that these fragments fully biodegrade. Not surprisingly, many believe these oxo plastics are worse for the environment than traditional plastics. So oxo-degradable plastics should not be confused with bioplastics."

Bonnie Bio products are all made from natural corn and vegetable ingredients with no chemical additives to ensure non-toxicity and allow for complete composting and biodegradability, yet they are as sturdy as traditional plastic. They are incredibly environmentally friendly as they break down back to CO2, water and biomass, which are renewable resources and they don’t leach any toxins into the environment whilst breaking down. We even use soy-based ink to print, which is eco-friendly.
