For many hunters, this is not simply a question of replacing one material with another. It raises practical concerns about firearm compatibility, the performance and availability of alternatives, costs, small-gauge shotguns, shooting ranges and the future accessibility of hunting and shooting sports.
At the same time, the debate involves environmental and health concerns linked to lead dispersed in nature. These competing considerations explain why discussions are often technical, political—and highly emotional.
FACE does not make EU law. Its role is to represent Europe’s hunters throughout the legislative process, provide evidence, highlight practical consequences and push for workable, proportionate solutions. This work helped secure major changes to the original proposal: the transition period for lead shot was extended from three to seven years, while lead bullets were removed from the restriction.
Not everyone will agree with the outcome. But without sustained engagement by FACE, its members and national hunting organisations, the final proposal would have been considerably more restrictive.

EU ban on lead in ammunition: here's what changes for hunters and sport shooters, after the REACH committee of member states approved the revised version of the European Commission's proposal.
Unlike the original setting, the regulation now focuses on lead-filled ballpoint ammunition, while long and short-barreled ball ammunition, as well as smoothbore slugs, would no longer be covered by the text.
