🇲🇹🚴 A historic result for Maltese cycling in Taranto.

Andrea Mifsud produced a superb ride in the Mediterranean Games Road Race, finishing 5th overall in 3:01:26 after winning the sprint from the chase group behind the medal positions.

The race split early and demanded smart tactical riding throughout. Mifsud stayed in contention in the chase pack, working to close the gap on the leading trio of Tommaso Dati, Tiago Gomes Antunes and Federico Iaomoni, who eventually claimed the medals.

There was also an important team effort behind the result, with Bernard Galea supporting Mifsud during the opening half of the race before Aidan Buttigieg took over in the latter stages and stayed with him through to the final climb.

According to Team Malta, the fifth-place finish represents the best-ever result by Maltese cyclists at Games of this level. 👏🇲🇹

A major performance for Mifsud and another significant step forward for Maltese cycling.

👏 Well done Andrea and Aidan, and best of luck to the Maltese trio for the road race!

Andrea Mifsud is set to make history as the first Maltese cyclist ever to compete in the Giro d’Italia. 🚲🇮🇹

The cyclist will line up with Team Polti VisitMalta in this year’s edition of the race, which starts on Friday and runs until 31 May.

The Giro d’Italia is one of cycling’s biggest and most prestigious competitions, with riders taking on stages across Italy and beyond, including demanding climbs and major challenges along the way.

Mifsud described this moment as a huge honour, both on a personal level and for Malta, saying he feels a duty to give everything and represent both Polti VisitMalta and Malta in the best way possible.

A huge moment for Maltese sport. Good luck, Andrea! 👏
