Country Series: Austria | Making Sport More Inclusive for Mothers
How can sport become more accessible to women navigating motherhood?
In Austria, initiatives are helping challenge the idea that motherhood and sport are incompatible.
A promising practice: Catch’n Serve Ball
Similar to volleyball, Catch’n Serve Ball is an accessible team sport in which players catch and throw the ball. In Austria, the initiative encourages mothers and women aged over 30 to participate in sport, including those with limited previous sporting experience. Its approach goes beyond participation: it promotes women's empowerment, encourages mothers to become coaches and referees, and creates opportunities for women who face additional barriers to accessing sport.
The lesson is clear: inclusive initiatives matter, but lasting progress also requires institutional support that enables women to continue their sporting journeys before, during, and after pregnancy. Through the MAMA project, we are exploring practices and approaches that can help make sport more inclusive and maternity-friendly across Europe.
