Training junior divers is not just about teaching scuba skills to someone younger. πŸ’™πŸ€Ώ

It means one-to-one attention, child-specific equipment, smaller tanks, properly fitting wetsuits and gear that actually fits the diver β€” not asking a child to adapt to equipment designed for adults.

But the equipment is only part of it.

Children learn differently. They communicate differently. They build confidence differently. And every child who comes to us is their own little human, with their own personality, pace, fears, curiosity and way of learning.

That is why our approach combines pedagogical teaching, play and uncompromising safety. We create the right learning environment for the individual child rather than expecting the child to fit into one standard method of instruction.

Sometimes that means slowing down. Sometimes it means turning a skill into a game. Sometimes it means giving them a little more independence β€” and sometimes simply staying right beside them until they're ready.

We love what we do, but there is something particularly special about watching a young diver gain confidence underwater.

Watching the next generation of divers emerge is genuinely one of the greatest joys of this job. πŸ’™πŸŒŠ

A little throwback… and a little foreshadowing. πŸ‘€

On the days you haven't seen us underwater, we haven't exactly been resting.

We've been cooking something behind the scenes at Dive Cypria.
There have been ideas. There have been debates. There have been corrections. There have been more corrections.

There may have been a few new grey hairs.

Some of them have names.

We have survived questionable geography, mysterious terminology, disappearing links, reappearing links, and enough tiny details to test the patience of a scuba instructor who has spent nearly two decades convincing humans to breathe underwater calmly. πŸ˜‚

But we're almost there.

And when we finally show you what we've been working on, we're going to need your help.

Consider this your advance warning:

πŸ”Ž There will be a treasure hunt.
πŸ’Ά There will be actual monetary prizes.
πŸ‘€ Attention to detail will be rewarded.
🧘 Patience may be required.

More soon.

Until then, here's a much younger Burcu from the archives β€” fewer certifications, fewer grey hairs, and absolutely no idea what future Burcu was going to get herself into. πŸ˜‚

Something new is coming to Dive Cypria.

And yes… we're going to let you try to break it. 😈

Dive Cypria by the Numbers πŸ’™

Yesterday, we reached another milestone: 100 Google reviews.

Out of those 100 reviews, 99 are genuine 5⭐ reviews from divers who trusted us with their underwater adventures.

The remaining one? A 2⭐ review from someone who never dived with us, never visited Cyprus, and decided that my views on women's empowerment deserved a negative review for a small women-owned business.

I keep that one as a badge of honour.

Because if you stand for something, you won't be for everyoneβ€”and I have never tried to be.

There are a few more numbers worth celebrating.

🌊 350+ PADI certifications and dive experiences since opening our doors in 2023.

From someone taking their very first breath underwater to Divemasters and Assistant Instructors taking the next step in their professional journey, we've had the privilege of being part of hundreds of underwater stories.

🐒 1,000+ dives completed under the Dive Cypria flag.

From Green Bay to Zenobia, from turtles to caves, wrecks and underwater museums, we've explored 17 different dive sites across Cyprus, introducing people to the incredible diversity our island has beneath the surface.

But my favourite number isn't on any report.

It's the number of people who arrived as customers and left as friends.

As someone who operates on roughly 50% logic and 50% magic, I have always believed that numbers tell stories.

They show where we started.
They show how far we've come.
And every now and then, they quietly whisper where we're heading next.

Thank you to every diver, every student, every family, every buddy, every instructor, every Divemaster, every review, every recommendation and every person who believed in Dive Cypria before there was much evidence that they should.

Here's to the next hundred reviews, the next thousand dives, and countless more adventures together.

The best chapters are still waiting underwater. πŸ’™πŸ€Ώ

Happy PADI Women's Dive Day! πŸ’™πŸ€Ώ

Maybe it's my 40s. Maybe it's the rebellion kicking in. But here's everything I don't do to celebrate women divers...

I don't celebrate women only one day a year.

Representation matters. Visibility matters. But I believe every dive day should be a women's dive day.

So instead of special events, here's what we do every single day at Dive Cypria:

πŸ’™ Women's-cut wetsuits from 2XS to 4XL. If the manufacturer makes your size, we try to have it.

πŸ’™ Free period products in our mixed-gender bathroom. No awkward conversations, no payment, no questions. If you need them, they're yours.

πŸ’™ We openly talk about female anatomy in our courses. Hormonal cycles, menstruation, menopause, and what current research tells us about how decompression sickness may affect women differently. Knowledge is part of safe diving.

πŸ’™ Prefer an all-female group? Absolutely. Prefer an all-male group? Also absolutely. Your comfort matters, and no explanation is ever required.

πŸ’™ Small-frame masks, colourful gear, spare hair ties, hair oil for the inevitable post-dive bird's nest... and yes, I even keep Vaseline around for beards (because fairness matters too! πŸ˜„).

For me, inclusivity has never been a marketing slogan.

It's simply how we run our dive centre.

So while I'm wishing everyone a wonderful PADI Women's Dive Day, tomorrow, next week, and every day after that, the kettle will still be on, the women's wetsuits will still be hanging on the rail, and every diver will still be welcome.

Because that's what inclusion looks like. πŸ’™

Sorry not sorry πŸ˜…
Things I do very deliberately:

πŸ”Ή I encourage my students to use goggles, flippers and tank instead of mask, fins and cylinder. It brings me immense joy knowing that somewhere in the world, a very serious dive instructor is clutching their pearls.

πŸ”Ή My gear is VERY colourful, and yes, I colour-coordinate my students too. No all-black dive gear elitism here.

πŸ”Ή My biggest fins are XL, white and pink. They are highly visible and I regularly pair them with a pink mask for students with size 45+ feet. To my absolute delight, that's usually the men. πŸ˜…

πŸ”Ή I have zero issues wearing the brightest rash guards, colourful wetsuits or iridescent mermaid scales while teaching some of the most serious skills in scuba diving.
I take scuba diving very seriously.

I never promised to take myself that seriously. 😜

My actions will continue because free will exists, life is short, and the ocean is colourful enough already.

We are proud to announce that Dive Cypria is now officially part of the Dive Reporter project in Cyprus. πŸŒπŸ’™

Dive Reporter is a collaborative marine conservation and citizen science initiative developed to help divers and dive centers record marine life observations and track changes in local ecosystems over time.

Today we made our very first official report to the app after encountering not one, not two, but THREE stingrays during a local dive in Cyprus. 😍

We won’t reveal the dive site this time (the rays deserve some peace and quiet πŸ˜„), but moments like this remind us how important it is to document and protect the incredible marine life we still have around our island.

We are also happy to support the project locally in collaboration with Marine and Environmental Research - MER Lab, helping contribute valuable underwater observations from the eastern Mediterranean.

As dive professionals, we spend countless hours underwater every week; and projects like this allow those dives to contribute directly to marine conservation and citizen science.

Because scuba diving is not only about visiting the underwater world; it is also about protecting it. 🌊
