WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT TRAINING AT SPARTA MMA? πŸ₯‹β€οΈ

We asked the kids a simple question, and they gave us plenty of different answers!

Some love learning new techniques. Some love the games, their friends and the coaches. And some are here for the fruit at the end of training! πŸŽπŸ˜‚

And honestly, that's exactly what we love to see.

Martial arts is about much more than learning how to fight. It's about building confidence, learning new skills, making friends, having fun and being part of a team.

Every child has their own reason for coming to training. Our job is to help them learn, grow and enjoy the journey.

Different reasons. One team. πŸ₯‹

WHAT IS A PIN β€” AND WHY DOES IT WORK? πŸ₯‹

Yesterday, I asked the kids a simple question:

β€œWho knows what a door wedge is?”

A door wedge helps stop a door from moving in a particular direction. But how can we use the same idea in grappling?

In side control, we use our body position to create wedges that restrict our partner’s movement and make escaping more difficult.

By controlling the upper body, blocking the hips and staying connected, we can make our pin stronger without simply relying on body weight.

The goal isn't just to learn a position. It's to understand why it works, recognise how our partner moves, and learn how to adjust when they try to escape.

Because when students understand the principle behind a technique, they can start applying it in different situations β€” instead of just memorising movements.

Don't just learn the position. Understand why it works.

That's how we learn at SPARTA MMA. πŸ’ͺ

πŸ₯‹ ESCAPE THE SUBMISSION. FIND THE NEXT ATTACK.

The arm triangle, or Katagatami, is a strong position. Many traditional escapes focus on pushing the elbow or creating space around the head and arm.

But escaping isn't always just about forcing your way out of the position. We need to understand the mechanics, create the space we need and recognise what the opponent's reaction gives us.

In this sequence, we work through the escape, turn the opponent over and arrive in side control facing the legs.

But we don't stop there.

From that position, we transition towards the head, connect the D'Arce choke, step over into mount and use a final adjustment to tighten the submission.

The important part isn't just the escape or the finish. It's the connection between them.

One position creates a problem.
The escape changes the position.
The transition creates another opportunity.
The adjustment helps complete the finish.

This is how I want our students to approach grappling: not as a collection of isolated techniques, but as connected actions and decisions.

Don't just ask, β€œHow do I escape?”

Ask yourself:

β€œWhere does this movement take me, and what becomes available next?”

POSITION β†’ ESCAPE β†’ TRANSITION β†’ CONTROL β†’ SUBMISSION

The individual techniques will always change. The principles stay.

DIFFERENT SKILLS. ONE SYSTEM.

πŸ₯Š THE PASSION GOES BEYOND THE GYM.

Today in the beautiful village of Lefkara, Cyprus, I spent some time practising a low kick with my son, Jakub.

No formal lesson. No training mats. Just a natural moment to share some knowledge and work on the details.

We talked about the mechanics of the kick, how to use the shin correctly, and where the kick should make contact.

Because learning martial arts isn't only about repeating movements. It's about understanding what you're doing, why you're doing it, and developing the ability to apply that knowledge.

As a coach, I spend a lot of time helping students understand these details. As a father, being able to share that same passion with my son is something I feel incredibly grateful for.

The academy is where we train together, but the passion doesn't stop when we leave the gym.

Learn. Practise. Understand. Share.

THE MMA FIGHT PLAN. πŸ₯Š

MMA is not a collection of striking techniques, wrestling techniques and BJJ techniques.

Those are the tools.

The real skill is knowing when, why and how to connect them.

A fight starts standing.

So we read the opponent.

Where is the distance?
How are they moving?
What are they giving us?
What are they trying to do?

Then we create a reaction.

Maybe they move forward.
Maybe they move back.
Maybe they defend the strike.
Maybe they defend the takedown.

Their reaction gives us information.

And that information creates our next option.

We can strike.
We can wrestle.
We can clinch.
We can take the fight to the cage.
We can take it to the ground.

The goal isn't to force one technique.

The goal is to take the fight where we have the advantage.

Then the opponent reacts again.

So the process continues:

POSITION β†’ PURPOSE β†’ ATTACK β†’ REACTION β†’ RESPONSE β†’ NEXT OPTION

And defence is part of the same system.

DEFEND β†’ REACT β†’ COUNTER β†’ ATTACK AGAIN

This is how we want our students to understand MMA.

Not by memorising hundreds of disconnected techniques.

But by understanding the problems, recognising reactions and learning how one action connects to the next.

This poster is our map.

The individual techniques will always change.

The principles stay.

Different skills. One system.

πŸ₯Š INVISIBLE PUNCHES

One of the details we work on when developing the jab is learning to throw it without giving the punch away.

The elbow shouldn't need to flare out or lift before the hand travels.

The punch should stay compact and travel directly towards the target.

In this drill, the wall gives the student immediate feedback. If the elbow starts to move away from the body, the wall exposes it.

We want to develop a punch that is:

β€’ Compact
β€’ Direct
β€’ Difficult to read
β€’ Connected to the body

The goal isn't just to move the hand quickly.

It's to learn how to connect the movement from the ground, through the legs and hips, into the upper body and finally into the fist β€” while keeping the punch hidden until it arrives.

Don't show the punch.

WRESTLING IS TOUGH. AND THAT'S WHY WE LOVE IT. πŸ€Όβ€β™‚οΈ

Wrestling teaches you to keep working when you're tired.

To keep moving when your body wants to stop.

To stay focused when you're under pressure.

You learn to push yourself, deal with discomfort, stay disciplined and keep going when things get difficult.

The endless drills.
The hard rounds.
The conditioning.
The repetition.

None of it is easy.

But that's the point.

Every time you push through something difficult, you build more than just physical strength.

You build discipline.
You build resilience.
You build confidence.

And those qualities don't stay on the mat.

SPARTA MMA
TRAIN HARD. STAY DISCIPLINED. KEEP GOING.

HOW DO WE KEEP THE BACK?

One of the first things we want our young grapplers to understand is that back control is not a static position.

The robber is always trying to escape.

So when they move, we have to move with them.

In our Police Officer vs Robber game, the robber manages to open the legs and move the bottom leg out.

Now the police officer has a problem.

Do we stay where we are and lose the position?

No.

We follow the movement, adjust the bottom leg and reconnect on the other side.

The goal is simple:

STAY CONNECTED.

The kids are learning that when the opponent moves, we have to recognise the problem, make an adjustment and find a new way to maintain control.

And then we turn it into a game.

They learn.
They solve problems.
They move.
They have fun.

That's how we build better grapplers.

THE WORK AFTER THE WORK.

Training doesn't always finish when the class finishes.

Sometimes it's another few minutes of work.

Climbing. Pull-ups. Grip work. Strength. Conditioning.

Small things that build the physical qualities we need for fighting.

In MMA, wrestling, and BJJ, grip strength is a huge part of control β€” controlling the hands, controlling the legs, holding positions, finishing takedowns and maintaining control when your opponent is trying to escape.

And when climb without using the legs to lock onto the rope, we're also challenging the core and abdominal muscles to keep the body stable while the hands do the work.

You don't always need another complicated exercise.
sometimes you ust need to do a little more.

The small work adds up.
