🎳 Three teams, one proud club!
The National Shirley and Ivan competition is now well underway, with our Coral Bay teams taking on fellow Cyprus clubs in the mixed triples format.
A chat over a b**r on the balcony at Neo's Sports Club got us wondering about the story behind the competition’s name. 🍻
The account we’ve heard is that it was named after an Israeli couple, Shirley and Ivan. At a time when men’s and women’s bowls were largely separate, Shirley is said to have encouraged Ivan to introduce mixed competition so they could play together.
We haven’t been able to verify the story, so we’re sharing it as an interesting piece of bowls folklore. If you know more—or have information that could help—please tell us in the comments!
Whatever its origins, the competition celebrates something we love about bowls at our club: women and men playing equally alongside and against one another, with skill, teamwork and a little friendly rivalry deciding the result, not your gender!
All the island’s bowls clubs take part in the competition, and every team is named after a bird:
💚 Coral Bay’s Wagtails, Kestrels and Swallows
🐦 Aliathon Bowling Club’s Herons and Kingfishers

And here are the just some of the faces from our three Coral Bay teams squads! 📸
Wishing every team great games, good company and plenty of memorable moments on the green, whatever your gender!
Come on, Wagtails, Kestrels and Swallows! Come on, Coral Bay! 💚
