Beautiful, dramatic and almost impossible to miss, lionfish have become a very familiar sight in Cyprus. But they’re actually not native to the Mediterranean. Pterois miles entered from the Red Sea through the Suez Ca**l and has spread rapidly through the eastern Mediterranean.
They’re incredibly effective hunters, feeding on small fish and crustaceans, and because Mediterranean species aren’t well adapted to this newcomer, lionfish can put additional pressure on native fish populations. They also have relatively few natural predators here, which helps their numbers grow quickly.
And those gorgeous spines? Look, don’t touch. Their dorsal, pelvic and a**l spines are venomous.
So yes… love them or hate them, when you’re diving around Cyprus, there’s a very good chance:
He’ll be there. 😂🤿
