LONGHORN 500: Guevara and Prosperi / “Tacos & Spaghetti” 2nd 2-Person Team,
Fredericksburg, Texas
April 3, 2023,

Yesterday, an hour and 40 minutes after Sylvia Maas and Tami Kerns/ “We Met in Texas” reached the finish line, Tom Guevara and Giovanni Prosperi / “Tacos And Spaghetti” came in as our second overall 2-person team in the Longhorn 500.

While the weather had been great for most of the race, Sunday morning brought a bit of drizzle and wind to make things a bit more interesting for Guevara and Prosperi. But the two were unfazed and wore broad smiles as they finished their 500.3-mile journey—which was no surprise—both are very experienced ultra-cyclists.

Prosperi was a member of the 2021 RAAM effort “Twisted Cycling.” While and Phillippe May made up our only 2-person team in RAAM that year, they put in a solid ride and finished in 8 days, 14 hours and 4 minutes (14.74 mph average). Guevara has been a regular in our events for over a decade, having competed in WTTC, RAW and RAAM.

24 HOURS OF TANDEMONIUM
“McDougall Green Machine & Team Skipper
6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships
November 4-6, 2022
Borrego Springs, California

Many of the racers who come to the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships (WTTC) bring their most serious race faces and game. While there may be smiles and joking during the pre-race visits with their fellow competitors, for those with goals of victory and records that all ends when the racing begins. And then there are the tandems. For the two teams that competed in the 24-hour, their time on the course seemed to be more about having fun.

Tim Skipper of “Team Skipper” fame teamed up with Joanna Zhou aboard Tim’s oh-so-trick carbon Calfee tandem in the 24-Hour Mixed Tandem Age 50-59 class. Unlike the super-serious racers who when they passed our RAAM Media crew kept their eyes focused only on the strip of pavement ahead, Skipper and Zhou were usually smiling and greeted our staff with a wave and a “hello.” They were clearly enjoying themselves. Together they put in 189.6 miles.

Jim McDougall and Debbie Haas Williams of “McDougall Green Machine” seemed to take the “enjoy the ride” concept even further. It was easy to tell when they were approaching—just listen for the laughs and conversation. And Debbie was sometimes seen sitting up on the back of their gorgeous green Hawthorne tandem (equipped with Infinity Seats), taking photos of their surroundings as they rolled around the picturesque Borrego Springs course. They were in the 24-Hour Mixed Tandem Age 60-69 category and put in 238.8 miles.

Debbie shared their experience on Facebook. Here some excerpts. “So we did a thing… well the PLAN was to ride 24h 5pm 11/4 - 5pm 11/5.

“Borrego Springs kinda sits in a bowl surrounded by mountains - it is really just kinda out in the middle of nowhere - west of the Salton Sea - about 2h east of the Pacific Ocean - sandy scrubby creosote desert - some date groves - couple solar farms - very little traffic and perfect for cyclists to go round and round an 18 mile loop. Surrounding Mountain ranges have their own colorful rocky beauty with visible layers of rocks, canyons and rock slides. The surrounding desert has LARGE metal sculptures - beautiful detailed artwork for all to drive up to enjoy.

“This was planned as the culmination of our 2022 cycling season - except it didn’t exactly turn out that way - for the past month we’ve both been fighting off whatever cold/cough/runny nose, general fatigue virus that’s going around (sounds like a TV commercial) - so we just kinda “rode.” The main 18 mile loop is generally flat - but also deceiving as sections are 1-2% grades that just generally eat away at your speed - thankfully winds were quite light and variable.
“SUCCESSES - the best outcome of the whole ride was pretty much riding all through the night - temps dipped below 40ish. This gave us a SUPER AWESOME opportunity to try out new shoe toe covers FOR THE WIN!! Finger gloves and a variety of clothing layers. It’s quite possible that nighttime weather temps on Paris Brest Paris 2023 will be very similar - in SoAZ we just don’t go out and do extended rides in “cold” temps. Our 300k and 200 mile time splits were PRs for us. Saw many shooting stars streak across dark skies. All night, in the distance we could see the lights of vehicles snaking over and down the mountain on Montezuma Valley Rd SR22 into the Anza Borrego Valley.

"And then the ”I’m really not 100% or even 75%” - “we haven’t been able to get in the miles in the past month” - “I am just spent” kinda kicked in. Lots of time off the bike during the daylight (I KNOW and that’s when temps were a mid-70 perfect!). Honestly, I was done at 180 miles - so the 238 should be a victory - just doesn’t feel that way - I know we have the ability to do more miles than that in 24h.

“Thanks to the RAAM Ultracycling for a well-organized event with on-road support and volunteers all night long safely motioning cyclists through the only stop sign (4 way stop) on the 18 mile loop - with bright lights & flags. We felt like real rock stars as George Thomas called The McDougall Green Machine through the start/finish arch each lap.

“Lots learned on our rookie tandem effort.”
