For Captain Ayen Monica of Nile Eagle, Saturday is more than just a football match. It is a dream year in the making.

Growing up in Bor, she was told football was not for girls. But watching Yei Joint Stars on a small screen made her believe otherwise.

Now, she is preparing to face the very players who inspired her: Esther Poni, Adong Joan, and Mary Anger.

“They were my mentors from far away. On Saturday, they are going to be my opponents up close,” Ayen shared.

She can not promise victory, but she has promised to fight with all her heart.

“Win or lose, I will walk off that pitch with a smile because I finally shared the grass with my heroes.”

Sometimes, the most beautiful part of a dream is not winning, but finally living it.

This Saturday, Ayen Monica gets her moment.

South Sudan Women’s Premier League: Are Our Clubs Ready?

The launch of the South Sudan Women’s Premier League brought renewed hope and excitement after nearly two years without competitive league football. However, with two matches involving El Merriekh and Atlabara abandoned prematurely in the opening four weeks, it is important to reflect on the challenges emerging so early in the season.

We do not yet have the full picture behind either incident, and both clubs deserve a fair opportunity to explain their circumstances. Still, these developments raise questions about club preparedness and the criteria the federation used to select participating teams.

What measures are in place to help clubs fulfil their fixtures, and how will the federation respond when matches cannot be completed?

Repeated disruptions could affect the league’s competitiveness, deny players valuable playing time and undermine the purpose of a full season.

We welcome the return of the league, but its long-term success will depend on preparation, accountability and support for participating clubs.

For those following women’s football, how do you view these developments, and what would you like to see the federation and clubs do differently to protect the future of this league?
