Today´s CICP Public Lecture focused on "The EU: Current Challenges and Reactions - What will the Future bring?"
HRH Samdech Norodom Sirivudh, Founder and Chairman of Board of Directors of the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, welcomed Prof. Dr. Klaus Segbers. The Director of the Center for Global Politics provided insights into six major areas in which the European Union currently faces serious challenges. According to Prof. Segbers these are:
1) The still unsolved Euro crisis
2) Terrorism, which no longer is a "far-away-topic", but nowadays likely to happen anywhere, anytime
3) The huge numbers of immigrants arriving to Europe since last year
4) The problematic relation with Russia (Annexation of Crimea, etc.)
5) This summers' Brexit decision
6) The raise in populism that can be witnessed almost everywhere
Despite a lot of uncertainties and changes, Prof. Segbers believes that the EU will not disappear but rather persist. Nonetheless, he predicts a time of flux ahead for the European Union. He believes that eventually it is necessary for the EU to modify many of its treaties to adapt to the current challenges, however difficult or unpopular this may be.
The Public Lecture was supported by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Cambodia.
