Another great study by Patrick J Owen asked “Which specific modes of exercise training are most effective for treating low back pain?”

This study included Pilates (among stabilization, motor control, resistance training, and aerobic training) as the most effective treatments for chronic low back pain. It even showed that Pilates was more effective than manual therapy interventions in physical therapy and chiropractics.

We know that movement is one of the most powerful tools for pain! In my doctoral dissertation, I examined clients with mechanical low back pain. Over 12 weeks, I examined a control group receiving passive myofascial treatment two times per week and compared it to clients receiving Pilates reformer exercises two times per week.

The myofascial treatment was fantastic and is a high-level intervention. However, what we saw with the chronic low back pain was that the successful movement experiences far outweighed any temporary relief from soft tissue or manual therapy.

We also believe the perception of moving better and moving well has a better predictive value of functional outcome and functional behavior.

The beauty of the Pilates environment is that we can provide modifications of load very easily. We can create these assisted environments that allow our clients to have successful movement experiences without pain!
