Theatre should be a space for truth and creativity - not subtle humiliation or power games. Yet many actors experience directors or teachers who manipulate, intimidate, and call it 'art.'

I’ve lived it: roles taken when I refused to flirt, auditions designed to break me emotionally, subtle sexual intimidation from a director who punished me when I didn’t play along. It was abuse of power. After that audition, I realised even if I got the job, I wouldn’t want to work with that director anyway.

Acting schools have been shut down for similar behaviour - students traumatised, some driven to desperate outcomes. This comes from a toxic belief:

'Real actors must suffer.'

No. We don’t.

We do not need trauma to act truthfully.
We do not need to be broken to grow.

There are healthier, advanced techniques based on imagination, presence, and emotional safety - ones I use and teach.

True acting comes from freedom, not fear.

If a teacher or director tries to destroy you 'for art' - walk away and speak up.

Richtiges Training baut Schauspieler auf, es zerstört sie nicht. 💫

Theater sollte ein Raum für Wahrheit und Kreativität sein – nicht für subtile Demütigung oder Machtspiele. Dennoch erleben viele Schauspieler:innen Regisseur:innen oder Lehrende, die manipulieren, einschüchtern und es 'Kunst' nennen.

Ich habe es selbst erlebt: Rollen wurden mir genommen, weil ich mich nicht auf Flirts eingelassen habe, Castings waren so gestaltet, dass sie mich emotional brechen sollten, ein Regisseur nutzte subtile sexuelle Einschüchterung, und weil ich nicht mitspielte, demütigte er mich. Es war Machtmissbrauch. Nach diesem Casting wurde mir klar: Selbst wenn ich den Job bekommen hätte, hätte ich nicht mit diesem Regisseur arbeiten wollen.

Es wurden Schauspielschulen geschlossen, nachdem ähnliche Verhaltensweisen ans Licht kamen – Schüler:innen traumatisiert, manche in verzweifelten Situationen. Dies beruht auf einem toxischen Glauben:

'Echte Schauspieler:innen müssen leiden.'

Nein. Tun sie nicht.

Wir müssen kein Trauma durchleben, um authentisch zu spielen.
Wir müssen nicht gebrochen werden, um zu wachsen.

Es gibt gesündere, fortgeschrittene Techniken, die auf Vorstellungskraft, Präsenz und emotionaler Sicherheit basieren – Techniken, die ich selbst anwende und lehre.

Wahres Schauspiel entsteht durch Freiheit, nicht durch Angst.

Wenn ein Lehrer oder Regisseur versucht, dich 'für die Kunst' zu zerstören – such das Weite und sag es weiter.

Heute habe ich ein Videocasting für einen wirklich spannenden Thriller gedreht und habe zum ersten Mal meine neuen tragbaren Mikrofone verwendet. Der Unterschied in der Tonqualität ist unglaublich. Jede Nuance, jeder Atemzug und jedes Detail wird hörbar und macht die Performance sofort stärker. Technische Qualität unterstützt die emotionale Wahrheit und hilft Casting Directoren und Direktorinnen, die Szene wirklich zu spüren.

Today I filmed a self-tape for a truly exciting thriller. It was my first time using my new portable microphones, and the difference in sound quality is incredible. A callback is a win. In this industry, we rarely get feedback - simply because casting teams are flooded with thousands of applications. There’s no time to reply to everyone.

I recently spoke with Bailey Frances, casting associate to Shakyra Dowling, who confirmed this. They do try, when possible, to pass feedback along, but most of the time a callback is your feedback: it means your work stood out.

The same goes for being invited to submit a self-tape, that’s already a vote of confidence in you.

So what can you do?

Be punctual (arrive at least 5 minutes early).
Do your homework.
Learn your lines.
Show up and give your best every single time.

Breaking into the acting industry is tough, breaking into an international market is even tougher. I know this firsthand. As a German actress who successfully entered the UK market, I’ve faced the struggles many actors encounter: audition anxiety, cultural differences, and the challenge of truly embodying a character. But through years of training, working with Hollywood coach Susan Batson and frequently training with Robert Castle, I developed an approach, that helps actors push through their limits.
