Shock Move: Simon van Dorp Loses His Coach as Francesco Fossi Joins German Rowing Team

The rowing world is in for a major shake-up! Italian coach Francesco Fossi, the mastermind behind the Netherlands’ recent Olympic dominance, is making a bold move—starting April 1, 2025, he will join the German Rowing Federation (DRV) to strengthen their men’s sculling program.

Fossi’s track record is nothing short of legendary. Under his leadership, the Netherlands secured gold (M4x), silver (M2x), and bronze (M1x) at the Paris 2024 Olympics. His coaching excellence was recognized globally when he was named World Rowing Coach of the Year in 2023 after guiding the Dutch M2x and M4x to world championship titles.

A former European champion and two-time Olympian himself, Fossi retired from competition in 2017 and settled in the Netherlands with his wife, a former national team rower. Now, he’s taking on a new challenge in Germany, a move that Robert Sens, DRV’s Head of Performance Sport, sees as a major win:

“It fills me with pride that we were able to bring someone like Fossi on board. I believe he recognizes the fresh energy in our team, and I’m excited for our scullers to benefit from his expertise.”

This signing comes just days after DRV secured another major coaching addition—Dutch coach Mark Emke, who will now co-lead the men’s sculling team alongside Sabine Tschäge.

However, this move leaves Simon van Dorp, one of the Netherlands’ top rowers, in a tough spot as he loses the coach who helped guide his team to Olympic success. What’s next for him and the Dutch squad? Stay tuned!

World Sculling Finals 2024 - The Trophy

🏆✨ A piece of rowing history: The Kaiserpreis Trophy, awarded to Frankfurter RG Germania in 1880, connects the club to a legacy that began in 1858, when Germany’s first rowing regatta was held on the Lahn. In 1875, Kaiser Wilhelm I established the Kaiserpreis, which in 1885 became an annual challenge trophy in Bad Ems. The World Sculling Trophy is now the sixth Kaiserpreis in history, with only 11 awarded in total.

For decades, rowers from across the country competed for this prestigious honor. Although the regatta was last held in 2018, the trophy now resides in the Bad Ems City Museum, preserving a chapter of rowing history that continues to inspire. 🚣‍♂️✨

Yesterday, the organizers of the World Sculling Finals gathered to discuss key learnings from this year’s inaugural event. After a productive meeting, they decided to host the 2025 regatta on October 11, 2025, with an exciting addition: a women’s race! The 2025 rankings will be published at the end of this month, allowing the world’s top scullers to prepare for this prestigious race, which continues to honor the legacy of the World Sculling Championships. Olympic champ Oliver Zeidler (Frankfurter RG Germania) claimed victory over Dutch rival Simon van Dorp (Roeivereenigung Willem III), finishing with a time of 8:10.83 minutes and a 9.89-second lead.
