The SOPROS project team extends an invitation to athletes, stakeholder representatives, academics and everyone interested in Olympic elite sport to attend the first public conference of the project.

The event titled "Athletes' Social Protection: Current Solutions and Future Needs" will bring together experts and stakeholders from sport governance, politics and academia at the German Sport University Cologne, on Monday, April 8, 2024.

The project team is proud to present its Self-Assessment Tools for athletes and stakeholders which aim to systematically assess the current status quo of national policies protecting athletes in Olympic sports against social risks. Current research highlights that different countries have developed various measures and solutions to ensure the social protection of elite athletes. Still, gaps may prevail in important fields, like maternity protection or old-age benefits. The aim of the conference is to learn about the different approaches existing in European countries and to discuss the future needs for a holistic approach to athletes' social protection.

Invited panelists include, at a national level, representatives of National Olympic Committees, National Federations, Ministries and public agencies in charge of elite sport policy, the military forces administering elite sport programmes as well as Athlete Associations. Invited organisations at the European and international level include the International Labour Organization, the International Olympic Committee, the European Olympic Committees Athletes' Commission and EU Athletes.

Participation in the conference is available in-person and online.

More details about the conference, as well as registration information, can be found here: https://www.dshs-koeln.de/en/institute-of-european-sport-development-and-leisure-studies/research-projects/ongoing-projects/sopros/

What are the Global Refugee Forum and the Sport for Refugees Coalition? How can you get involved? Find out during the 23-27 October Week of Action!

UNHCR and the Sport for Refugees Coalition, in partnership with The International Platform on Sport and Development, have hosted a Week of Action on Sport and Refugees annually since 2020. The 2023 edition will champion the role of sport in improving the lives of refugees, in particular through greater inclusion and protection from harm, abuse and neglect.

At the forefront of current efforts is the Global Refugee Forum, which will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2023. A diverse group of stakeholders, including states, humanitarian, development, faith, sport, youth and other actors will share expertise and knowledge, and pledge to further share responsibility to support refugees and the communities that host them.

This year's Week of Action will focus on the role of sport at the Global Refugee Forum, in particular the Joint Pledge on Sport for Inclusion and Protection, underlining the key role sport can play in support of the UN Member State-mandated international framework for solving the refugee crisis, the Global Compact on Refugees.

The Joint Pledge on Sport for Inclusion and Protection represents a refreshed perspective on the different ways in which sport can contribute to improved lives for refugees and the communities that so generously host them. The pledge presents a shared conviction that sport is, and can make further substantial contributions to better futures for some of the most marginalized people on Earth, and is developed through the efforts of a multi-stakeholder reference group, which includes Deputy Head of the Institute, Karen Petry!

Call for articles: Participatory approaches in sport for development 14/10/2023

📢CALL FOR ARTICLES: Participatory approaches in sport for development

The Erasmus+ Sport for Social Cohesion Lab (SSCL) project has worked to support the implementation of a highly-participatory Living Lab approach within five sport for social cohesion programmes in four different European countries, and the insights, learning and tools from the project are shared on the project page, as well as in a related toolkit.

However, this particular approach is hardly the final word! The SSCL project team therefore invites organisations, practitioners and academics to share their experiences and insights on adopting participatory approaches (e.g. participatory action research, co-production, Living Labs) within their programmes.

Articles should be 500-1,000 words long, and the deadline for submission is 15 November 2023.

Check out the page on The International Platform on Sport and Development website for more information and details:

Last week, the Institute of European Sport Development and Leisure Studies hosted the 26th annual conference of the European Committee for Sports History (CESH). This three-day event featured not only a wide range of interesting and informative workshops and discussions, but also activities beyond an academic setting, such as a tour of the German Olympic Sport Museum and a basketball game with MA DEV students.

We hope all attendees enjoyed their time in Cologne, and we are already looking forward to next year's conference!

In July 2020, the first ever free massive open online course (MOOC) focused on Sport for Sustainable Development was launched on the FutureLearn platform. A collaboration between the The International Platform on Sport and Development, the Australian Government, and the Commonwealth Secretariat, this English-language course attracted more than 6,350 learners from 185 countries.

This success spurred the creation of a French-language course, which the project team hopes will be just as successful and improve equity and access to information and resources.

The course begins on October 16, 2023, and registration has been possible since October 2. The eight-week course is designed to help individuals and organisations harness the potential of sport in their work, including contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other priorities.

More details about the course, as well as registration information, can be found here: https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/sport-for-sustainable-development-french/2
