A study published in the Equine Veterinary Journal (BEVA Congress 2024) surveyed 509 horse owners, and the results might surprise you:
8.9% accuracy in spotting bilateral lameness (when a horse is affected in two limbs simultaneously).
32.3% accuracy on hindlimb lameness — literally worse than a coin toss.
0.36 correlation between an owner’s confidence and their actual accuracy.
