I’ve been writing a book on Kali.
It started when someone asked me to write a curriculum. Somewhere in that process it became something bigger.
Kali is a Filipino martial art I have trained for a long time. The book isn’t about techniques — it’s about where the art comes from, the Masters, and how it survived to reach the modern world.
Before the full book comes out I put together a free preview. Twenty pages. Four of the twelve areas — Double Stick, Single Stick, Panantukan, and Spiritual Development. And a section on what this training does to the brain.
DM me and I’ll send you a copy.

The art of Kali uses a series of complex movements utilising bilateral and cross-lateral movement - both hands working simultaneously, each side of the body contributing independently and in coordination with the other. The art requires the whole mind and body to synchronise as one, to the point where the movement eventually happens without conscious direction. Free ebook http://bit.ly/4s8WhjV

Serious Kali training makes demands on the mind that most physical training never comes close to. Bilateral coordination. Cross lateral movement, pattern recognition under pressure. Processing multiple threats simultaneously. What that consistent demand produces over time is remarkable. Neuroplasticity the brain’s ability to rewire, adapt and grow is not something most people associate with picking up a rattan stick. They should.
After 30 years of training I believe this is one of the most important and least talked about aspects of the Filipino martial arts. There is a full chapter on it in the book.
The free e-book is in the bio. The full story is in the book. Workshop in Dresden in May

I was seventeen years old when I walked through the doors of the Bob Breen Academy in London.
Bob Breen and Terry Barnett , both full instructors under the legendary G**o Dan Inosanto who ran something unlike anything I had experienced before. The academy was that, an education into martial arts through high level instructors and practitioners. It was the hub of education. JKD was the framework but within that framework everything was on the table — Jun Fan, Kali, Thai Boxing, Boxing, BJJ, Judo.
It was here, in 1996, that I first properly encountered Kali, and it opened a door for me.
I am still discovering and learning — through my students and teaching what I learned to the best of my ability — every single day.
