RIP
Our thoughts are with the children, family and friends of Patricia Martinson. Today, a legend is laid to rest.
If you were lucky enough to know Patricia, you knew that our former Props Manager and Moosemilk major domo was the life of the party. Always equipped with a story and a solution, Patricia’s charm and humour were on full display backstage at the Scotiabank Centre. People orbited around her at parties and receptions.
In her 101 years, Patricia’s life was filled to the brim with adventures and stories. Born in Northern Ireland, she felt the call of the sea. Military service saw her travelling to all sorts of places: India, Australia, New Guinea, Hong Kong, Korea, France, Ghana, Singapore, Indonesia, Guyana, Trinidad, and Canada, where she made a permanent home.
In the 1980s, she underwent gender affirmation surgery and by the end of the decade, had moved to Halifax. She became a volunteer with the Tattoo in the 1990s and soon became invaluable as the Props Manager, building sets and fixing odds and ends.
Her retirement with the Tattoo came in 2015, at the age of 92, but this didn’t slow Patricia down. She became an active and much-loved volunteer at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and delighted in sharing her near century of seafaring with those keen to hear all about it.
We’ll miss Patricia dearly. Rest in peace.
