Another reminder that time marches on. This is a photo taken of the American Consulate General in Hamburg, Germany in the winter of 1981-82, my final duty station as a Marine Security Guard. I was informed today by my dear friend, and Hamburg native Thomas Hausmann that it was sold to a Munich-based chain that plans to turn this architectural landmark into a luxury hotel.

This building, which sat on the banks of the Outer Alster Lake (this pic was taken from atop the frozen lake), was purchased by the US in 1950. Notoriously, it served as the Hamburg headquarters of the N**i Party from 1933-1945. I was not the only Marine that felt that place was haunted. Still, it was, and still is a place of historical significance that I am proud to have been a part of.
