Hamburg Exiles Rugby Football Club

Today we had the pleasure of discovering another aspect of rugby: refereeing🏉

Without these men and women, we would not be able to play our favourite sport safely.

A big thank you to Thomas Engler, who is in charge of the Hamburg Verbandsliga, and to the other speakers who introduced us to the principles of this key role in our sport.

We learnt about the complex aspects and the finer details that referees have to deal with, as well as how to manage people and emotions to ensure the game always remains a pleasure.
This is a first step in the development of rugby in Hamburg, and one in which the Exiles are actively involved.
We want to give the Exiles the opportunity to understand this sport and provide them with access to playing it in every way possible. This is just the first step, and from now on you’ll be able to find us on the pitch, both playing and officiating.

Indeed, we want to be the link between novice and experienced international rugby players and the people of Hamburg who want to play this wonderful sport.

Also it was a pleasure to share this moment with Sankt Pauli rugby and Hamburg rugby club. We are we can grow the rugby in Hamburg togeyher

The pre-season is all about getting together. Thanks to our long-standing partner, HAVENS LIVING ,we were able to meet up to prepare for the new season.

We met the residents of the block and chatted with them, as, like us, they are expats who have come to study, work or start a new life.

This allowed us to offer them advice and support, thanks to the Exiles’ sense of community.

What a season 🍾 it has been for the Hamburg Exiles 🖤🖤🖤 as newly promoted side in the Regionalliga Nord.

The season is over, and what is probably the most international rugby team in the German Rugby Union has secured second place in the table straight after their promotion. A team that has grown even closer together over the past year. One that has worked even harder on its weaknesses and strived even more vigorously to further build on its strengths in this physical sport.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved,” says our South African head coach and former professional rugby player, Andre van Niekerk . “The team has managed to develop continuously. And the status quo isn’t enough for us yet. The Exiles will use the off-season to continue working hard on themselves so that they can deliver an even better performance on the pitch next season.”

We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks for the tireless support of our head coach Andre, our backline coach Rian Viljoen and our forward coach Trevor Pretorius. A big thank you also goes to our players’ wives, who have supported us so well throughout the season, and of course to the Exiles fans on the touchline.

Jose !!! Thank you for putting your body on the line for the Hamburg Exiles last season! We loved your continious aggression, your commitment and the will of fighting for every inch of the pitch! Unfortunately, you had to end the season slightly early due to a broken bone in one of your games for the exiles. Please recover quickly!

You represented your country 🇵🇹 in the best way you could. We as a club gained a valuable family member and we are very sad to let you go back to Porto next week!

However, once an Exile always an Exile. We are hoping to see you very soon and perhaps the next time when we are touring to Porto 🇵🇹 playing against you and your home club. All best for you Jose and let’s keep in touch in the meanwhile.

What a game from the lads, they put their bodies on the line and fight until the last second to get a win. 💀🔥

Our Exiles let the hosting team take a large advantage during the first half during Ricklingen was hitting well the space.
The second half was much more equilibrated and the red and black took the game to their side and pushed really hard to get the bonus point. The first in the league, after a fatal counter attack, killed the hamburg team hope to get closer on the scoreboard. ⚫️🔴🦅

In the first game, our Exiles put up a good fight but had to watch come out on top.
