For years, the firm TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten has been committed to sustainable and respectful revitalization. Due to the gradually growing appreciation of existing building stock, an increasing awareness of issues related to sustainability, resource conservation, energy- and space-efficient use, and the circular economy, buildings currently threatened with demolition are increasingly being evaluated for potential repurposing and renovated accordingly. From an ecological and, above all, an energy perspective, renovation is significantly more sustainable when considering the building’s life cycle as a whole. Every demolition results in the release of “gray energy”—the primary energy expended to construct the building.
The renovation project in Neumuenster presented here is precisely such a project: The load-bearing structure of the former Karstadt building, consisting of three building sections (built in 1951, 1962, and 1978), has been largely preserved.

In many rural regions of Sierra Leone, access to basic education remains a critical challenge. In villages like Mafabane, children grow up without the opportunity to attend school—many have never entered a classroom. This project Mafabane Village School addresses that urgent need by creating a place where education, community, and future opportunity can take root in West Africa.

HELMHOUSE is a modern seven-storey residential building nestled among a historic row of Art Nouveau and transitional style buildings in the heart of Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district. Its architectural language is clearly rooted in the 21st century, while at the same time forming a worthy addition to the historic buildings in the neighbourhood. The project fills a gap in the typical Berlin perimeter block development on Senefelder Strasse, not far from Helmholtzplatz, which also gave the project its name.

The municipality of Wandlitz in the northern suburbs of Berlin has had a high demand for affordable housing for years: in the Wandlitz district of Basdorf, a new nature-oriented, family-friendly residential quarter with a total of 150 rental apartments was built.
A total of 20 three-storey buildings have been constructed on the site: eight garden houses, four city villas, six multi-storey apartment buildings and two maisonette houses.
