CIH Center for International Health The Center for International Health ( CIH-LMU ) is located at the hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU).

The CIH-LMU has been promoting international cooperation in the field of medical education and research since 2009. The vision and overarching aim of the CIH-LMU is to empower health professionals. With this vision, CIH-LMU aspires to meet health-related challenges through capacity building in training and research. With the new OH-TARGET (One Health) project, the vision of the CIH-LMU has expanded to a more participatory and interdisciplinary approach to improve global health conditions.

A New Milestone for One Health Education in Bolivia!

A major milestone for the OH-TARGET project: In collaboration with CIHLMU, the Directorate of Research, Science, and Technology (DICyT) at Universidad San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca (USFX) has launched a new 24-month, in-person Master’s program in Interdisciplinary Research with a focus on One Health.

🎓 17 professionals were selected to join the program, bringing diverse backgrounds in medicine, engineering, sociology, psychology, biology, and agronomy.

🌱 By connecting human, animal, and environmental health, the program will strengthen interdisciplinary research skills and create opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and international research networks.

🤝 This is an important step toward strengthening local research capacity and advancing the One Health approach in Bolivia.

Shaping the Future of the CIHLMU and OH-TARGET Network
On September 28–29, 2026, partners from Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Germany came together online for the annual CIHLMU Cooperation Meeting.

Over two days, participants reflected on ongoing activities, discussed lessons learned from the One Health Network Fund (OHNF) projects, and worked together to identify strategic priorities for 2027–2029.

💡 A key highlight was the OHNF panel, where colleagues from Bolivia, Tanzania, and Brazil shared project findings, lessons learned, and ideas for sustaining and sharing successful approaches across the network.

🌎 Regional discussions brought partners together to identify priorities for 2027, explore opportunities for joint activities, and develop a shared set of network-level priorities.

A big thank you to all colleagues and partners for their active participation, valuable contributions, and continued commitment to collaboration! We look forward to building on these discussions in the years ahead. 🤝

One Health and Climate Change: A New Learning Experience at USAC🌎

From March 9-May 10, 2026, the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) offered the One Health and Climate Change course for the first time, developed by CIHLMU and supported by LMU Munich.

🌱 The blended-learning course brought together 29 undergraduate students, who explored how climate change affects the health of people, animals and the environment – with a focus on the Guatemalan context.

💡 As a final project, students developed and presented scientific posters on the impacts of climate change on water, soil and air, putting their newly acquired knowledge into practice while strengthening their scientific communication skills.

🎓 Despite having to balance the course with their regular studies, all 29 participants successfully completed the course – demonstrating the potential of blended learning to integrate One Health education into undergraduate programs.

🤝 The successful first edition marks an important step in strengthening One Health education at USAC. With future editions already planned, the course will continue to support students in understanding and addressing climate-related health challenges in Guatemala.

Building Skills for Pandemic Preparedness in Ethiopia 🇪🇹🦠

From June 8–12, 2026, the Advanced Module in Pandemic Preparedness was held for the second time at Jimma University, Ethiopia, bringing together 20 participants from seven countries. 🌍

The week combined theory and hands-on learning on infectious disease epidemiology, surveillance, outbreak response and health policy.

🔬 Participants used real-world data to simulate a disease outbreak and worked in groups to assess pandemic preparedness at four local health facilities. Their findings were compiled into a report with recommendations for strengthening preparedness at the institutions involved.

🤝 Beyond the coursework, the module was also a week of cross-cultural exchange, collaboration and shared learning, bringing together Ethiopian participants and CIHLMU Master’s and PhD students from Cameroon, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Ethiopia follows its own calendar, which is around seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar. It has 13 months, 12 months of 30 days, plus a short 13th month, and the new year begins on 11 September.

Today, we celebrate Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year. 🌿✨

📘 Our 2025 highlights are here!

We are pleased to share the first CIH Annual Highlights Report, looking back at a year of collaboration, learning, and progress across our global network. 🌍

In 2025, CIH activities connected partners and colleagues across 13 countries, strengthening collaboration in research, education, capacity building, and One Health.

Some highlights from the year include:

🌍 One Health Competence Centers in Ghana and Bolivia continued to strengthen regional capacity in research, education, and training.

🌱 523 students participated in CIH e-modules offered across our global network.

🦠 The new Advanced Module on Pandemic Preparedness, developed in collaboration with Jimma University, brought together 22 participants from more than 7 nationalities.

🎓 A new Trilateral Alliance for Medical Education connected LMU, Jimma University, and KGUMSB to strengthen collaboration in medical education, faculty development, and student exchange.

🧠 The BEAM Project supported the development of a new brain-stimulation training programme in Ethiopia, contributing to the establishment of the country’s first dedicated TMS service.

👶 The first pediatric ultrasound course in collaboration with Ola During Children’s Hospital in Sierra Leone strengthened local capacity through training and knowledge exchange.

🔬 And in 2025, CIH Network members contributed to 19 publications, advancing research and evidence in global health.

These achievements would not have been possible without the commitment of our partners, colleagues, students, alumni, and collaborators across the CIH network. Thank you for being part of this journey!
