It is with great sadness that we announce that the world-famous choreographer Hans van Manen has passed away at the age of 93.

With great love and admiration, we bid farewell to our figurehead and our inspirer.

As one of the greatest artists of our time, he has left an indelible mark on Dutch and international dance. He has inspired generations of dancers to surpass themselves.

Besides being the best-known choreographer of the Netherlands for over sixty years, Hans van Manen (1932), was – and still is – regarded internationally as one of the great masters of contemporary ballet.

Van Manen was resident choreographer at the Dutch National Ballet from 1973 to 1987 and rejoined our company as a resident choreographer in 2005, renamed senior choreographer in 2025.

He was also one of the most productive choreographers, creating more than 150 works, including his ballets for television.

Each of his creations – performed by over 100 companies worldwide – bears his unmistakable signature.

With phenomenal musicality and a distinct vision of human relationships, eroticism and equality, he has brought dance back to its essence: pure, powerful and timeless.

Simplicity is his adage, expressiveness his forte – with a single hand movement or glance, he allows his dancers to evoke a world of emotion.

His work will live on long after us.

We bow deeply to him and wish his husband Henk and many loved ones much strength. 19/12/2025

Great man has passed. You will continue living in your peaces!
