Among the great masters of Tai Chi Chuan, Wu Jianquan is remembered not only for preserving and developing Wu-style Tai Chi, but for his legendary skill in Push Hands (Tui Shou). Those who trained with him described an ability that seemed almost effortless, he could neutralize an opponent’s force with impeccable timing, dissolve incoming pressure, and issue power with remarkable precision.
His Push Hands embodied the highest principles of Tai Chi: listening energy (ting jin), sticking without resisting, yielding without collapsing, and responding with perfect timing. Rather than meeting strength with strength, Wu Jianquan demonstrated that true mastery lies in sensitivity, balance, and an intimate understanding of energy and structure.
His extraordinary skill has inspired generations of practitioners to look beyond physical technique and pursue the deeper internal qualities that make Tai Chi both an effective martial art and a lifelong path of cultivation. His legacy reminds us that the greatest power is often the one that cannot be seen, but can always be felt.

“Great traditions are not preserved by chance they endure because extraordinary people dedicate their lives to them.
Wu Jianquan was one of those rare individuals. Born into the legacy of his father, Wu Quanyou, he refined and shared an art that would become one of the great classical styles of Tai Chi. Yet despite his own immense reputation, he never stopped learning.
His friendship and mutual respect with Yang Chengfu stand as a beautiful reminder that true masters seek understanding rather than rivalry. Though they represented different family traditions, they shared a common purpose: preserving the profound principles of Tai Chi for future generations.
Wu Jianquan also devoted himself to studying the internal classics under Song Shuming, deepening his understanding of the art beyond technique alone. He recognized that Tai Chi was not merely a collection of movements, but a complete internal system rooted in philosophy, sensitivity, and lifelong cultivation.
When the time came to entrust his life’s work to the next generation, he chose his son-in-law, Ma Yueliang, transmitting to him the complete Wu family curriculum not only the forms, but the applications, the internal methods, the weapons, the push hands, and the essence of the tradition itself. Through that transmission, an unbroken lineage continued.
Today, every sincere practitioner who values softness over force, humility over ego, and understanding over victory carries a small part of Wu Jianquan’s spirit. His legacy is not frozen in history it lives in every careful posture, every moment of listening, and every generation committed to preserving the art with integrity.
Some men leave behind books. Some leave monuments. Wu Jianquan left a living tradition that continues to shape hearts, minds, and hands around the world. ☯️🙏

Few figures in the history of Chinese martial arts command the respect earned by Ma Yueh-liang. A direct heir to the legendary Wu family tradition of Taijiquan, he embodied the rare combination of profound internal skill, martial effectiveness, and lifelong dedication to preserving authentic knowledge.
Renowned for his exceptional sensitivity, balance, rooting, and mastery of internal energy, Ma Yueh-liang demonstrated that true martial power does not come from brute force, but from precision, timing, structure, and deep understanding of body mechanics. Those who had the opportunity to touch hands with him often described an almost effortless ability to neutralize force and control an opponent while remaining completely relaxed.
Beyond his technical brilliance, he devoted his life to transmitting the principles of traditional Wu style Taijiquan, ensuring that future generations could experience the art as a complete system of health, self cultivation, and martial skill.
Today, the legacy of Ma Yueh-liang continues to live on through dedicated practitioners and organizations committed to preserving the depth and authenticity of the tradition. Among them, the Eternal Spring Institute plays an important role in carrying forward the teachings, principles, and martial culture that he helped safeguard. Through rigorous study, practice, and transmission, the Institute ensures that this remarkable heritage remains alive and accessible for future generations.
