THE CITY IS THE COURSE

A few thoughts after the World Urban Golf Championship in Winterthur

The World Urban Golf Championship in Winterthur showed, very quickly, how a city can become a golf course.

Making that possible takes imagination, organisation and a great deal of work that most players never see. Someone has to walk those streets, spot the possibilities, convince people that hitting golf balls through them is somehow a reasonable idea, and then make the whole thing actually work. A huge compliment to everyone who designed the course, built it and made the tournament possible.

So Winterthur was not just a good course. It was a fantastic tournament. The whole event had a special atmosphere: well organised, welcoming, lively and full of the energy that makes Urban Golf so enjoyable. From the first tee shot to the final round, it felt like a real celebration of the sport and of the community around it. Another huge compliment to everyone who made this tournament such a great experience.

And then there was the city itself.

Gravel, mulch, grass – or whatever the sun had left of it – concrete, paving stones, leaves. Stairs, terraces, fountains, strange angles and even a shot from a car. The course constantly changed under your feet and made you look at Winterthur differently:

Seriously? From HERE to THERE?

Particularly good were the holes around the headquarters. That was where players and spectators met, watched each other and, inevitably, came up with increasingly stupid ideas. Why play around an entire block of buildings when you might be able to hit over one of them? Which building would have been the best one? Still wondering.

That is Urban Golf.

The city gives you possibilities. We do something slightly unreasonable with them.

Which also leads to one small criticism. Urban Golf doesn’t really need invented targets.

For me, the most beautiful Urban Golf targets are the ones that are simply there.

A bin? Great.
A bench? Great.
A fountain? Even better.
A shopping trolley abandoned somewhere it shouldn’t be? Practically an invitation.

But if we have to bring the shopping trolley ourselves and put it on top of the fountain, or place a miniature washing machine on a bench, I’m not quite as convinced. 😄

The city is already full of ridiculous targets. We don’t need to help it too much.

There’s something wonderfully stupid about standing in the middle of a street and deciding that the bin over there is now a golf hole. That, to me, is Urban Golf: finding the game in what is already there rather than bringing the game with us.

And I’d make some of those targets easier too.

If I hit a golf ball into a fountain and the damn thing bounces straight back out again, in my little Urban Golf universe I have hit the fountain. 😄 It went in. For one glorious fraction of a second, mission accomplished. We don’t need VAR to decide whether the ball has established permanent residence there.

The same goes for the number of shots. In Dudelange/Luxembourg we normally play a maximum of four. Maybe five would be a nice World Championship luxury. 😄 But six, seven or eight attempts while the next teams are waiting can briefly turn Urban Golf into Urban Waiting.

A World Championship is more than finding out who is best at Urban Golf.

So please bring back groups of three teams too, as we experienced in London, Amsterdam and Prague.

That format had something.

Someone always hit the bloody thing.

And strangely, that was good for everybody. 😄 If you missed, somebody else produced a miracle shot.

And once more, a huge thank you to everyone in Winterthur who made it possible – organisers, helpers, players, spectators and all those people standing somewhere on a street for hours, waiting for the next bunch of people with golf clubs to arrive.

And maybe also a thank you to those who weren’t in Winterthur.

To all the people who inspired us during the year, who showed us their streets, their targets, their ridiculous shots and their own way of playing – and somehow let us be part of it, wherever we happened to be.

Because perhaps that’s the nicest thing about Urban Golf: we can all be kings.

Some got a crown in Copenhagen. Some somewhere else. Still others have been kings all year without anyone handing them one.

And maybe they are the biggest kings.

We wore crowns too in Winterthur. Hardly anyone noticed. And our golf didn’t exactly look royal either. 😄 But for one day, we felt like kings.

And that’s probably how it should be.

No throne required. No king worth more than another.

And if next time the washing machine is a real washing machine again – and it happens to be standing in the street already – I’ll happily aim at it.

And I’ll hit it.
