HOW TO BIKE THROUGH THE HEART OF CAIRO FOR

The beauty of cycling deserves to be appreciated by everyone. Besides sating the thrill-seeking appetites of adrenaline junkies, biking builds an appreciation for urbanism, and makes you feel at one with the environment around you, even if you’re cutting through the intimidating labyrinth of entanglements that form Cairo’s streets. This , we share three different ways you can get peddling and chase that elusive Biker’s High.

Cairo’s Nile Corniche is getting a makeover, and the development of a walkway alongside the river from Rod El Farag Bridge to Qasr El Nile Bridge comes included with a protected bike lane, the first of its kind in the capital. If you don’t have your own bike, then step into Moll Marshall on Soliman El-Halaby Street in Orabi and rent your ride at ‘Be a Biker / Kan Drag’, or head to Abou El Goukh on El-Gomhoreya Street by El-Shohadaa Metro station to get a bike for the day.

Cairo’s streets are treated to a rest early each morning before the day’s bustle ensues, and they’re especially empty on Friday mornings. So, whether it’s the Corniche towards Maadi or Downtown Cairo’s historic streets, you can revel on two-wheels in the crisp morning air, making for a lovely summer hobby. If you wish to roam the leafy corners of Maadi, you can find some rental bikes at Basklyt on Street 106.

Finally, if you feel more comfortable moving as part of a convoy, Bescletta offers group rides for all levels. The shop offers rented bikes and group rides across Heliopolis, New Cairo, Sheikh Zayed, Maadi, and Nasr City. Its yellow-vested fleet can be seen roaming the streets each weekend, using safety in numbers to freely ride through Cairo’s neighbourhoods.
