Want to learn Dynamic No Fins (DNF) and Constant Weight No Fins (CNF)? 🌊

One question I sometimes hear is whether you need to choose a particular freediving education system to learn no-fins techniques.

The answer is no.

I teach both DNF and CNF as part of my AIDA and Molchanovs courses here in Dahab.

During Jason’s recent AIDA 4 course, we spent time developing his no-fins technique, both in the pool and in open water.

And the results were impressive!

🏊 75 metres DNF — on his very first experience with pool freediving.

🌊 20 metres CNF — applying his no-fins technique in open water.

No-fins freediving is about much more than swimming without fins. It involves coordination, body position, streamlining, and learning how to move efficiently through the water.

Whether you’re following the AIDA or Molchanovs education system, developing these skills can be a valuable part of becoming a more complete freediver.

And it’s something I really enjoy teaching!

COACH'S NOTEBOOK

Not every soft palate closure is a soft palate problem.

Two freedivers can have similar equalization difficulties, and the cause can be completely different.

Upper closure: the soft palate lifts and seals against the pharyngeal wall. This is a soft palate coordination issue.

Lower closure: the back of the tongue meets the soft palate and blocks the passage. This is a tongue coordination issue, with the tongue positioned too high or too far back.

I often see a lower closure treated as a soft palate problem. The student keeps doing soft palate exercises and the real cause never gets worked on.

You can't know which closure a student has without looking into their mouth. Look first, then choose the exercise.

Soft palate control still matters. Advanced techniques like reverse packing require you to open and close the soft palate consciously.

Same symptom. Different cause. Different causes require different exercises.

Save this post. You will need it for later.

Congratulations to Jason on completing his AIDA 4 Freediver course here in Dahab! 🎓🌊

What a successful course, with some great progress along the way!

One of the highlights was introducing Jason to pool freediving for the very first time. During the course, he managed an impressive 75 metres Dynamic No Fins (DNF) and 20 metres Constant Weight No Fins (CNF) in open water.

We also spent time working on the fundamentals of mouthfill equalization, developing his awareness and control, and learning how to apply the technique successfully during his dives.

For me, AIDA 4 is about much more than completing performance requirements. It’s an opportunity to develop new skills, improve technique, and build a stronger foundation for further progression as a freediver.

Really happy with Jason’s development throughout the course!

Well done, Jason! It was a pleasure teaching you! 👏

It’s always special when a former student returns for more coaching. 😊

Magda started her freediving journey with me several years ago, completing her AIDA 2 course here in Dahab.

Since then, she’s continued freediving in different places and completed further courses along the way.

This year, she returned for a dedicated week of equalization coaching.

Our focus was on developing her awareness and control of the different parts involved in equalization, working with advanced Frenzel, reverse packing, and learning how to equalize safely at and below residual volume.

For me, equalization coaching isn’t just about reaching greater depths. It’s about understanding what’s happening, developing better control, and making freediving smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.

And that’s exactly what Magda described in her lovely Google review:

“He opened up a whole new world for me, making my dives much smoother and more pleasant.”

Thank you, Magda, for coming back and trusting me with another part of your freediving journey. It was a pleasure working with you again! 😊

Should I return to competitive freediving in 2027? 🤔

It’s been more than two years since my last freediving competition.

My last competition wasn’t exactly how I wanted to finish. I was dealing with a back injury, and things didn’t go as planned.

Since then, my focus has mainly been on teaching, coaching, and developing other freedivers.

But lately, I’ve been feeling something I haven’t felt for quite a while.

A real motivation to train again. To challenge myself, work towards new goals, and see what I’m still capable of achieving.

And it’s making me wonder whether 2027 might be the year I return to competition.

What do you think? Should I give competitive freediving another go in 2027? 🌊

Highly personalized freediving coaching in Dahab. 🌊

No two freedivers are the same, so why should their coaching be?

Whether you’re struggling with equalization, working on your technique, adapting to greater depths, or preparing for a competition, my coaching starts with understanding where you are and identifying what you need to develop.

With a maximum of three freedivers per buoy, each student receives individual coaching, observation, feedback, and a plan built around their own progression.

Upcoming coaching weeks with available places:

📅 24–31 October — 2 places remaining
📅 From 6 December — 1 place remaining

Coaching is also available throughout the year. If you’re interested in other weeks or a longer coaching period, feel free to contact me.

What’s included in a coaching week?

• 5 coaching days
• 5 dry sessions
• 5 open-water sessions
• Individual feedback and technical development
• Small groups — maximum 3 freedivers per buoy

📍 Dahab, Egypt

The goal isn’t simply to dive deeper. It’s to understand what’s limiting your progression and develop the skills to move forward with greater awareness, consistency, and confidence.

The Blue Hole has claimed its fair share of freediving equipment over the years. 🤿🌊

Another mask almost joined the collection today.

Luckily, I was in the right place at the right time. 😄

Have you ever lost equipment to the bottom of the sea? What did you lose? 👇

Ready to become an AIDA Freediving Instructor?

My next AIDA Instructor Course will take place in Dahab from 16–30 November 2026.

Instructor Courses are demanding. You are developing teaching skills, safety skills, problem-solving, demonstrations and your own performance while also absorbing a large amount of theory.

That’s why I’ve structured my Instructor Course to create as much space for learning as possible.

Theory and preparation begin online before you arrive in Dahab, allowing you to build your knowledge progressively rather than trying to learn everything during an intensive practical course.

Once in Dahab, we can focus much more of our time and energy on teaching practice, observation, feedback, repetition and refinement.

The course is limited to a maximum of 3 candidates, allowing plenty of individual feedback and time to develop throughout the course.

The goal isn’t simply to pass the Instructor Course.

It’s to leave ready to teach with confidence.

When progress stops, the obvious response is often to try harder.

More dives.
More depth attempts.
More repetition.

But sometimes the thing holding you back started much earlier than where the dive actually ends.

It might be equalization. Technique. Tension. Confidence. Depth adaptation. Or a combination of several things.

That’s where good coaching starts: not by simply asking you to do more, but by identifying what is actually limiting your progression and deciding what to work on from there.

That’s also why I don’t use the same approach with every freediver. My coaching in Dahab is built around the individual — with dry sessions and open-water sessions working together around what you need to develop.

If you’ve been stuck at the same depth, struggling with the same problem, or simply feel that your freediving isn’t progressing the way you want it to, send me a DM.

A freediving course should be more than a checklist of requirements.

Passing the course and earning the certification matters — but for me, the bigger goal is that you actually develop as a freediver.

That means understanding what you need to work on. It might be equalization, technique, relaxation, confidence, safety, or something completely different.

That’s why I teach my AIDA courses over an extended timeframe. It gives us more space for learning, repetition, feedback and individual development instead of rushing from one requirement to the next.

And I like to go beyond the standard curriculum. I also teach DNF and CNF during my AIDA courses, giving you the opportunity to develop across more freediving disciplines.
