The pygmy sweeper (Parapriacanthus ransonneti), often known simply as the golden sweeper or glassfish, belongs to the sweeper family (Pempheridae). They are famous among divers for forming massive, shimmering schools in caves and shipwrecks, particularly in the Red Sea. 📏Key Biological FeaturesAppearance: They grow to a maximum length of 10 cm (4 inches). Their bodies are semi-transparent with a coppery-pink hue, while their heads and large eyes feature a striking, metallic gold-green sheen. 🔦Bioluminescence: This species possesses light-emitting organs inside its thoracic region. The glow is fueled by luciferin, which they absorb through their diet of tiny planktonic crustaceans. 🐟Nocturnal Habit: They remain hidden during the day. At night, they emerge from the reef into open water to feed extensively on zooplankton.Schooling and DefenseDuring the day, pygmy sweepers congregate in tightly packed schools numbering in the thousands.
