Fantastic news for England's transplant football team! ⚽
England have been crowned champions for the first time at the transplant football World Cup, following a 5-1 victory over Spain 🎉
We caught up with the team's goalkeeper, Adam, who received a kidney transplant from his sister just over three years ago.
"It was incredible being able to lift the trophy. The real winner, though, is organ donation. Without the amazing gift each one of us has received, none of this would have been possible."
Four years after being diagnosed with tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) - a condition that causes inflammation within the kidneys - Adam's kidneys began to fail. Fortunately, his sister, Frankie was a perfect match and was able to donate a kidney before the need for dialysis treatment.
While at the transplant clinic, a chance meeting with a former teammate from his playing days introduced Adam to transplant football. Since then, he's helped the England team to become British, European and World champions!
"Being involved with transplant football has given me so much more than I expected. It’s given me friends for life, involvement in a community that understands and something to focus on. I'm so pleased we've been able to raise awareness of organ donation through sport."
