Pink skies over Almunecar ✨

When the light hits the old town like this,
everything slows down for a moment.

Church bells.
Warm air.
White rooftops glowing at sunset.

This is southern Spain at its softest.

Most tourists never see this side of Almuñécar. 👇

Every May, something extraordinary happens in the old town.

17 crosses appear overnight — built by hand, covered in flowers, ceramics, antiques and local objects, each one telling a different story about this community.

It’s called Las Cruces de Mayo. It dates back to the discovery of the Holy Cross by Empress Helena. And it has quietly become one of the most atmospheric street festivals on the Costa Tropical.

Here’s what you actually get:
🌸 Flower-covered altars you can walk right up to
🫙 Pop-up bars with tapas, wine and buñuelos with chocolate
🏆 A city-wide competition judged on flowers, lighting and creativity
🎶 Music, neighbours, no entry fee — just show up

The festival runs from April 30 to May 3. Pick up the official map at the town hall and do the full route. You won’t regret it.
