The Dawn of Brazilian Water Polo: Olympic Pioneers (1920). Water polo developed in Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century through Rio de Janeiro's rowing and aquatic clubs, where swimming, rowing and water polo formed part of a vibrant maritime sporting culture. While the First and Second World Wars severely disrupted the sport's development in Europe, aquatic activities in Brazil continued to flourish, despite the temporary impact of the Spanish Flu pandemic (1918–1920). Water polo became an established discipline within the country's principal aquatic clubs and local championships were already being organized before Brazil's Olympic debut. The Brazilian team at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games included Agostinho Sampaio de Sá, Orlando Amêndola, Victorino Fernandes, Abrahão Saliture, João Jório, Ângelo Gammaro, Alcides de Barros Paiva, Carlos Lopes and Edgard Ribeiro. Several members of the squad were multi-disciplinary athletes who also competed in Olympic swimming or rowing events, reflecting the versatility of early Brazilian aquatic sport. At Antwerp—the first Olympic Games held after the First World War—Brazil became the first South American nation to compete in Olympic water polo. The team defeated France 5–1 before losing 7–3 to Sweden, the eventual bronze medallists, finishing sixth overall, still Brazil's highest Olympic placing in men's water polo. Brazil's Olympic performance suggests that South America had already developed a competitive water polo culture rooted in its maritime traditions. The uninterrupted development of aquatic sports in Brazil, together with the later South American proposals for rule reform, invites further historical investigation into whether an alternative, more movement-oriented conception of the game was already emerging during the early decades of the twentieth century.
