World’s largest women’s adventure race heads to Ōtepoti Dunedin in 2027

Spring Challenge will celebrate its 21st edition in Ōtepoti Dunedin, with entries opening on 1 October 2026.

After two decades of taking thousands of New Zealand women on adventures around the South Island, the Spring Challenge is heading south to one of its most exciting destinations yet, Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Organisers Nathan and Jodie Fa’avae have confirmed Dunedin as the host destination for the 21st Spring Challenge in September 2027, continuing an event that has grown from a bold idea in 2007 into what is believed to be the largest adventure race in the world.

The announcement comes as preparations enter their final weeks for the landmark 20th Spring Challenge, being held in Hanmer Springs from 25-27 September 2026.

🏔️🚣‍♂️C'est officiel ! L'équipe I TRIATLETI CORSI portera haut les couleurs de notre île lors du prestigieux Adventure Racing World Championship (ARWC 2026), du 27 septembre au 10 octobre 2026.
Loin de la pression des écuries professionnelles, ce quatuor d'ici compte prouver que la connaissance intime de sa terre est la meilleure des stratégies de survie.
Le Défi : "Corsica is Magic"L'équipe s'attaque à un tracé dantesque de 500 kilomètres et 18 000 mètres de dénivelé positif imaginé par Raid in France. Une traversée en autonomie totale et sans GPS :

🎤 En route pour l’ARWC 2026
Q : Courir un Mondial chez soi est un honneur, mais aussi une responsabilité. Comment gérez-vous la pression ?
R : C'est une motivation immense. Le soutien des nôtres aux transitions nous portera dans les moments durs. Notre but est clair : être finishers ensemble.
Q : En autonomie totale pendant 6 jours avec très peu de sommeil, quel est le secret de votre cohésion ?
R : L'empathie. Sur 100 heures de course, tout le monde casse à un moment. On gagne en prenant soin du coéquipier en détresse, pas en courant seul.
Q : Issus du triathlon, comment s'adapter à 18 000 m de dénivelé ?
R : On a troqué la vitesse contre la force. On enchaîne les week-ends chocs en montagne avec des sacs de 10 kg. Le relief corse ne pardonne aucun excès.
Q : Les cartes sont secrètes jusqu'au départ. L'instinct local fera-t-il la différence ?
R : C'est notre arme secrète. Le maquis et les aiguilles sont des labyrinthes. De nuit, face au brouillard ou au vent, notre connaissance des microclimats nous évitera les erreurs fatales.

Free from the pressure of elite professional teams, this local homegrown squad enters the race to prove that deep knowledge of their homeland is their ultimate survival strategy.
The Challenge: "Corsica is Magic"The team faces a brutal 500-kilometer route with 18,000 meters of positive elevation gain designed by Raid in France.
They must cross the island in total autonomy without GPS:

It is a massive motivation.
Feeling our people's support at the transition points will lift us when exhaustion hits. We want to be finishers and cross that line together.
Q: With total autonomy and just hours of sleep over six days, what is the secret to team cohesion?
A: Empathy and internal fair play. In a 100-hour race, everyone breaks down. The secret is being ready to carry a teammate's pack or slow down. The team that wins is the one that cares for each other in the worst storm.
Q: Coming from triathlon, how did you adapt to 18,000 meters of vertical climb?
A: We swapped speed for raw strength. We spend full weekends in the high mountains carrying 10kg packs. The Corsican relief is unforgiving; consistency is key.
Q: Maps are kept secret until the very last minute. Will local knowledge determine the outcome?
