As Michael Flatley and I prepare to say our goodbyes following an interview in which we have talked primarily about cancer, writes Emily Hourican, we touch briefly on his plans for the future. There are indeed plans, but 'nothing I think that I can share with the class yet,' he says with a laugh, adding 'there are a few surprises. I’ve been approached to do some incredible things in Ireland that never even came into my mind… so I’m considering that now with my team of inside advisers.'
Three weeks later, on July 25, Flatley’s barrister announced during the ongoing High Court case Flatley has taken in relation to works carried out at Castlehyde, his home in Co Cork, that there had been a 'material change in circumstances' for Flatley – namely that he will look to run in the presidential election this autumn.
President Michael Flatley? Maybe.
During our conversation, he said cancer is a 'constant presence in my life'. 'It’s a weight to carry, when you’re trying to focus all your energies on your family. My son graduating from Eton and going to university, my wife, my focus on creating new shows – I just created a new Christmas show – but always in the back of my mind, you have to think: will I be here to see it? Those things present themselves, and that was never there before.'
'It’s a feeling those of us who have had this will instantly recognise. When all is said and done,' he said, 'all of us think our contributions to the planet are in some ways significant or memorable, but the truth of the matter is human life is that short, and there are very few of us alive today who will be remembered when we’re put under ground.'
'Very few people of all time are remembered after they’re gone. So we need to recognise the fact that it’s Our Lord who makes all of these things happen, and I believe he’s the one who pulled me through this. I think that’s an important part of it. But I think the fact that life is so short – to have it made shorter is, I think, somehow unfair, I feel. As a human. From God’s point of view, it all makes sense…'
