4 years ago, this horse was not "well behaved".
4 years ago, my now 11 years old had no interest in horses.

But over the years, shifts happen.

I always try to give freedom of choice. To both horse and human.
I never regret this.
Even when this can bring me doubts, can be scary, can be lonely in the moments when it seems not to work.

A month ago, my daughter said she wanted riding classes with her mum!
I chose this favorite little horse!!!
And we started last week end.

Freedom of choice for all ( including horses, yes, its about education and understanding)
Gutfeeling, vision, education, persistance and baby steps all dear to my heart.

4 years ago, my daughter had no interest in my passion and was'nt asking to ride.
4 years ago, this fabulous little horse was not "well behaved".
For both, not point was made, I tried my best to understand their viewpoint.
Last week end, this happened...💖

Remember he is scared, misunderstood or uncomfortable/with pain.
He is not naughty, "playing up" or "having a moment".
To fix all unwanted bahaviour, examine tensions.
Take time at the start, go deep to build trust and relaxation.
Performance in my eyes can only be built on genuine relaxation. And I believe performance has to be funded on the horse's natural beauty, balance and elasticity.
Relaxation happens first in stillness and sometimes even this is a huge challenge for the horse.
Conformation, temperament, personal history all influence horses' performance.
Often, as we see a horse improving, we are only starting to see the traumas, the tensions and to ride a happy horse who is also our friend, we have to go deeper in relaxation.
The horse owes us nothing, however most of us owe him part of our sanity!!!😂
We owe him our time and to learn to ride as best as we can.

This is Karoube, the baby horse I bred here in Mallorca out of my Irish Sport Horse mare, competing last week with my friend's 15 yrs old daughter.

I sold her Karoube when he was an unbroken 3 years old. I knew I could not keep him at the time for personal reasons and the kindest option was to sell him to the best knowledgeable home.

Today I post this as a reminder about the importance of kindness within our sport, and not only towards horses but equally towards riders.

I celebrate my friend and her daughter's commitment to producing a sound, happy and competitive partnership, showing that hard work, patience, kindness and skill go perfectly hand in hand with competitive results.
Yet when she was 12, Anastasia got some nasty comments from 'horse lovers" on social media for smacking Karoube approaching a jump. She was only doing her best and her riding has always been the fairest.

Ignorance of a topic wrongly directed is hurtful, especially to young people.
So please refrain from judging too quickly and appreciate all the good you don't see: the 4am wake up, the daily grind after school in wet freezing weather, the endless training days...
That is also true love for the horse.

Today, I am over the moon for this pair.
Having known both the horse and Anastasia from their first day on this earth, I feel privileged to be able to watch them grow together.

From a horse lover and a sport lover to all horse and sport lovers💖

Let's talk horse welfare for sport horses...

A sport horse is a horse.
The fact that we want to compete or develop higher performance with them has nothing to do with the horse.
I love training, pushing forward, sport in general.
I also love horses. For their amazing nature, their athletic capacity and their beauty.

Train your horse for mental and physical balance. Train your horse for elasticity, develop muscles gradually, it takes time, all the time the horse needs. Adjust your goals to your horse's needs not the other way around.

Physical and emotional balance through classical equitation make for a joyful partnership between horse and owner, no matter the goals.

Performance is not a sign of happiness.
Increased soundness, safety and behaviour predictabily are better markers of the horse's emotional balance.

If you want to develop a happy partnership and achieve your goals, you first must pay attention and help your horse's emotional balance to transform his physical balance.

When your horse is balanced and secure from the ground, your rides will transform for more joy.
And, when working on your own balance and seat, performance will also expand, whatever the discipline.

There is no joy for a trainer like seeing people transforming themselves through the love for their horse💖
